There names may sound alike but the nations you listed main official languages are all different. In the order you placed them they are - French, English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Yes, I know. That doesn't making any less stupid to have five nations with the same name (I forgot about Papua New Guinea, though it kinda gets a pass).

Yes, coming from someone (me) who was into country profiles when I was a kid. (It actually all started when my parents got me a world flags chart at age 5.)

Geography is a broad discipline that helps show how locations can impact human culture and a way of getting to know our planet better. With geography one can know where a thing is located, why is it there, and how does it change or develop. It helps us understand how the physical world works.

Due to my mother's fear of flying we used to do a lot of long-assed road trips when young. To pass time we always played a game whereby you name a country, city, town, river or continent and the next person needs to take the last letter to name a new place and so on.

That had us poring over maps to find new names, so you could proudly flourish, say, Makokou with 'it's a city in Gabon actually'..

Why do so many people understand much more about celebrities and entertainment than they do about the real world in which they must live?

I LOVE geography. My brother and I had a globe in our bedroom, and we would quiz each other on international trivia with that as our reference.

We should also teach more Civics in schools.

Probably because one is more likely to be exposed to pop culture than science whenever the TV or the Internet connection is turned on.

Now that you mentioned it, we never did have a "proper" globe in our house all my life., just standard-issue maps used as reference for schoolwork.

Each person should, at the very least, be able to name every continent and every single country in Eurasia.

well there's geography and there's geography. they should certainly be able to find their way home from school if they miss the bus or it breaks down or something.
not sure how useful it is to know the capitals of every country on the planet and where they are. granted i have fun learning and knowing these things, and especially where all the rail lines are on the planet and what equipment runs on each of them and where each is manufactured, the maker and model number.

infrastructure is inveriable more valuble thn the collective egos of nations.
geography was one of my fun classes, it was a major relief and escape from all the propiganda in some of the others.

but important? well what is important to each person is not a one size fits all question.
what is important for people to understand, is how a affects b, and what that means for the kind of world they have to live in.

It is pretty important, in my opinion. It is a good idea to know where the fuck you are compared to other areas.

That's totally because the government, which is entirely composed of welfare-sucking nanny-stater filthy commie saboteurs, violates the Free Market Fairy with unnecessary regulation and other SJW conspiracies like workers' rights. GPS is a governmental project, its satellites were launched by NASA (another filthy statist anti-market conspiracy), which proves objectively my point, and if you disagree I'll notify Zombie McCarthy ad the John Birch Society.

Yes. Geography is essentially the context of which history is the content. So if you don't learn geography, history doesn't make any sense.

If high school kids don't know what the capital of Italy is or can't even point to New York on a blank map, then it's evident we need to teach geography.
