Is it Important for Kids to Learn Geography?

Postby The Super Fork » Tue May 07, 2019 11:57 am

Today in History class we did an activity where we used a map website to locate countries in the world. I was shocked to see that some students struggled to locate North and South Korea, among other places. I has assumed that people knew where commonly mentioned countries were in the world.

Personally, I really like geography and I think it is very important for kids to learn where countries are. Knowing at least basic geography opens doors for kids to learn more about the different cultures all around the world.

Website we used:
https://www.seterra.com/
I highly recommend this website for improving your geography skills. If you want to try one of the maps and post your score here, feel free.
(My best on the Asia map is %100 percent in 56 seconds, after lots of practice).
Political Compass Score:
Economic Left/Right: 0.5
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.44

Yes, it is important, and it's really pathetic that so many people don't seem to know anything about anything. It's important for any democracy that the populace be informed, otherwise other forms of government are preferable.

Given how interconnected the world is now, yeah, I would say its important to know about the other locales of the world.

This says it all. I had to learn geography, and I can't tell you how many times I corrected my teachers, and others on countries, and even
continents.

They may not like to hear it, but aside from the Second World War, most of the pacific island nations don't really matter. Let's face it, Nauru isn't much of a world power.

I know all of Europe, the Americas (except for the little Caribbean islands), all of Asia, and most of Africa. Don't know the small islands though except the Maldives.

It should not be compulsory to learn it in detail (like, just offer it to the students as extra class/curriculum/module for those who are interested), but at the same time, I think both Physical and Human Geography should be taught at elementary levels. I mean, I joke around, but it will help if we can clear up Austria vs Australia, and the fact that Africa isn't a country.

I thought this question was asking if it's important for kids to learn where mountain ranges are and where elevation dips, not maps. That would be cartography.

But then we wouldn't have places like Guinea, Guyana, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea.

Well for starter it is good for tourism which means more taxable economy which feeds the welfare state which feeds me so yes. And you don't know how painful it is to have to explains the locations of nations when talking about geopolitics/economics/history (especially when combined with politics).

Yes, pretty much this. After some friends claim that Moscow is an independent country, I begin to think that geography should be taught at schools.
