Philippines and the South China Seas crisis

Postby Rio Cana » Mon May 06, 2019 12:35 pm

Has we all know, China has been expanding into what the Philippines considers there territorial waters which China also considers to be her territorial waters. The Hague was brought into this. They reached a decision in 2016 in which they found that China is overstepping there claims. But this has not deterred China since they do not recognize this decision by the Hague. So China has continued expanding, getting closer to the Philippines while the Philippines government (executive and legislative branch of government) stance seems to be lukewarm. That is until a few days ago. Found out the the Philippines Supreme court (judicial branch) has mandated the government to protect those reefs and islands near the Philippines.

This short video explains it all. It was uploaded on May 04 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRh3oI7YtpM

I think the government will be moved into action but only if they get the US to back them up. So what do you think.

The current Philippines President will absolutely refuse to push the claim.
He has already abandoned the islands to China, and does whatever Beijing tells him to do.

That's pretty sad, yet not unusual.
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

"lukewarm" is a nice way of putting it. "Bending over backwards" is better. Vietnam and Indonesia both have been able to properly enforce their own claims and no war has come their way. Meanwhile, Duterte's, well, bending over backwards to appease his overlords in the Mainland.

Let us hope a patriot takes office in the Philippines in the near future; or else their claims to the islands may soon be lost.

I'm curious what would happen if another tsunami hit like in 04. Does China have any plans for mass evacuation of their colonists?

The end goal of a friendly administration is to get more of the disputed waters. China's real keen on the stuff.

China will only understand military action taken against it. Unfortunately the Philippine military compared to the Chinese military is like a toddler taking on Mike Tyson.

To be fair, it’s not like he could do anything to China if he wanted to.

Well there'll be a joint US-ASEAN military exercise very soon, so I don't find military strength against China a problem, or at least a big problem if ASEAN countries can maintain US cooperation (and maybe throw Australia into the mix).

And for that note ASEAN countries should stop fighting eachother for territory in SCS with Big Xi lying very near, ffs. Fuck EU, SAU ftw.

Duterte's government won't do anything to enforce the Supreme Court's orders.

Massive Chinese investment isn't a problem either for enforcing your territory. What you lack is courage, such as a literally insane maritime minister when needed for example.

India has been trying to work some charm amongst the other nations of the region in order to support its own interests in the area. India wants to keep a handle on Chinese naval potentials and also Chinas interests in helping Pakistan with Gwadar port.

He could re open the US bases! That would help.

With the Philippines in its current state of having basically no Navy and no Air Force sure.
But the Philippines is much closer to the Spratlys than China.
So it has a massive geographical advantage.

Chinese fighters from the mainland cannot reach the Philippines.

If it invested in long range air defense and anti ship missiles, Super Hornets, things like that it would be able to use area denial.
Use the same tactics China uses against it.
Turn the Philippines into “unsinkable ships” much closer to the Islands than China is.

Area denial allows a weaker power to keep a stronger out of a limited area.
Which is enough for the Philippines.

Ultimately all victims of Chinese imperial claims (India, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan) need to work together though. Together they can stop China.
And should be fully aware that if any of them loses, they all lose.

It is either stand together or hang separately. After seizing territory from one the move on to the next.
Thanks to China controlling the Philippines presidency the Philippines is the first on the chopping block. But it will not be the last.

Unfortunately the current Philippines President is a Chinese stooge and will give China whatever it wants without a fight.
Why fight a country when it will surrender without trying?

“A little hope”?

Sorry, what? We’re still miles ahead of China in military and economic power and have much more territorial control over the world and a much heavier presence everywhere we go. We have military bases all over the globe.

We’re still going to be on top, not after a century, but even after a millennia.

Well, those artificial islands are essentially landfills...

Order then to dredge up their new islands and take them back to China?

Anyone else notice that America is the youngest country with the oldest surviving government (like... combined 1st and 2nd British Empires [alt: all the combined French Republics One through Five, or the Tang Dynasty] old)? I wonder how that is...
