No one is forbidding you to mourn, you just can’t do it the old fashioned way.

The Chinese have been fighting funeral expenses for thousands of years. Many imperial Chinese officials would try to put a stop to it as well.

Also, may I suggest scotch?

This is hilarious, though I imagine most of these are essentially China's version of the bizarre American/Euro laws that are never enforced, IE not being able to flush the toilet after a certain time or something equally as extraordinary.

"The old fashioned way' is how most cultures and people to death, through a funeral and sadness (often expressed via tears). It's pretty much a universal thing to be sad when a loved one dies. In what way does that threaten Communist control? The only thing I can think of is maybe martyrdom, but that seems unlikely unless they die standing up for their beliefs.

Yes how dare people mourn "the old fashioned way", you know, how every normal human being does with lots of emotion, crying, and heartache and 'acting sad'. Just fucking stop that shit, that isn't too much to ask.

Also please enlighten me on how having enough food is bad, or how not letting people download shit on your phone is bad. Or having a fucking beard for Christ sake.

Chinese funerals in imperial times could cost a fortune. Literally almost an entire savings. So yes officials would try to do things like limit coffins to one coffin.

I’m not even sure China is Communist. But what do I care about the future of Islam in Xinjiang? Islam hasn’t been a positive force since the Islamic golden age.

Sociologically speaking, religion, in no matter what form (bar extremism, obviously), acts as a way for people to come together and/or deal with issues, such as mortality, giving them hope. Islam is indeed rather...regressive, compared to modern western democratic societies, but it still provides, at the very least, those benefits.

I think that they just made some bullshit up.

China is a capitalist country,,with non-reglamented food, many people travel abroad, the culture places a lot of importance on traditional funerals, and a lot of those sound insane (e.g. the compass thing).
Capitalism, single-payer healthcare, pro-choice, LGBT rights, progressive personal taxation, low corporate tax, pro-business law, welfare for those in need.
Nazism, edgism, dogmatic statements, most of Abrahamic-derived morality (esp. as law), welfare for those not in need.

Perhaps less communist, more authoritarian, though you clearly prefer people and thoughts oppressed your way.

But enough of that -- as an atheist I don't really care about the survival of any religion in Xinjiang or anywhere else in China or the world either, other than as a collection of stories I can mine for literary inspiration, but what of it?

I may not care about the religions now under prosecution, but the people... they are another matter. They choose what to believe, and if keep the peace they should be left alone. Frankly, the Chinese probably wouldn't be imposing the strictures they have imposed on their westernmost territories had they considered that a people left alone to do their thing likely will not rebel.
