It would be nice if the OP copypastes the above list while adding way more meat to his post.

I think that they just made some bullshit up.

China is a capitalist country,,with non-reglamented food, many people travel abroad, the culture places a lot of importance on traditional funerals, and a lot of those sound insane (e.g. the compass thing).

The Chinese government governs different parts of China differently, as you well know.

Dang China, you make me want to distance myself more and more from the left...
This nation actually does not really represent my OOC/IRL views.

Quality of life means me getting to castigate the powers that be if they do shit.

Quality of life means me knowing about them doing shit.

Quality of life means me thinking, feeling, and doing all sorts of emotions as the moment passes, not just forcibly happy ones.

Quality of life meana me hiking to some rocky outcrop and not getting pulled over, hauled out, and driven off to the nearest concentration camp.

Quality of life means me making money and spending a good amount of it in ways not necessarily socially acceptable but nevertheless legal, if I choose to.

Quality of life means me choosing to retire from the world and into solitude, if I choose to.

That is quality of life for me -- me getting to exercise my freedoms, not being so constrained as to do naught but dig a hole and bury myself in it.

At least with that you can choose not to eat or go frolicking. Here, not doing either marks you as an outcast, fit only for liquidation.

How people get to want this on others, let alone themselves... it's too terrifying to contemplate at length.

Owning a tent
Owning a compass
Owning extra food
Owning multiple knives

Well I guess going camping is verboten now.

Eating breakfast before the sun comes up

Working an early shift is extremist now.

Abstaining from alcohol
Abstaining from cigarettes

And now being healthy is extremist.

Arguing with an official
Sending a petition that complains about local officials
Having a VPN
Not having your government ID on your person
Having WhatsApp
Not letting officials take your DNA
Not letting officials scan your irises
Not letting officials download everything you have on your phone
Not making voice recordings to give to officials
Speaking your native language in school
Speaking with someone abroad (via Skype, WeChat, etc.)
Not attending mandatory propaganda classes
Not attending mandatory flag-raising ceremonies
Not attending public struggle sessions (the public humiliation of political rivals)
Refusing to denounce your family members or yourself in these public struggle sessions
Trying to kill yourself when detained by the police
Trying to kill yourself when in the education camps
Performing a traditional funeral
Inviting multiple families to your house without registering with the police department
Being related to anyone who has done any of the above

You were talking about political freedoms, so I thought it was self-explanatory that it would be political.

Political freedom is not necessary if the governing body is high-quality, in which case it's better if it's unopposed.

Now, getting the good governing body is a big issue, but I think we should be trying to work it out, not just criticize non-democratic states on it.

The only other article where this story is found.

As the story seems to be relatively thin on the ice, it raises some more questions...

Those comfortable with oppression like this rarely imagine it's their face under the boot.

In the end, I think this is going to backfire on China. Oppressing people this hard is a bad idea, especially Muslims in the era of global Jihadism. I think an ISIS style insurgency of Uyghur and foreign Muslims, possibly with the support of foreign states, is a very likely result of the policies in Xinjiang.

It is a fact that I have nothing but the deepest loathing for authoritarians, the shit they pull, the people they leave for dead, the societies they wreck, the mentalities they twist into acquiescence, the intelligences they silence, just so their narrow vision of peace and order at the cost of everything else is put in place...

...yes.
