If you're assaulting someone to shut down they're free speech then it is inherently authoritarian. Quit with this predictable pedantic denial and accept it.

An individual taking direct action and non-violently shutting down hate speech (in this case, with a little spray of lavender oil and some glitter) that helps the normalization of hatred against already-marginalized minority groups is anything but authoritarian. Society should absolutely reject and shut down such speech where it arises in order to protect the marginalized and oppressed.

Therefore, not only was this guy correct in detracting Mike Knowles' speech away from the blatant transphobia he was peddling, but it also wasn't authoritarianism. :^3

I'd say outright denying the existence of trans people, as Mike Knowles was doing, is transphobic and hateful.

Considering that the United States does not have laws against "hate speech," it really is a case of you said, somebody else said. I don't doubt that this Michael Knowles fellow has said hateful things about trans people. Assaulting him, even in the way this was done, just turns him into a special snowflake.

Oh no, yeah, I completely understand that the law itself in America doesn't recognize hate speech as a thing but would totally recognize that lavender oil as assault, but that just means my personal opinion on this matter is contradictory to the law. I still don't think it's a bad thing, per se, for people to non-violently react to deliberately hateful, targeted speech toward marginalized groups despite that.

The problem is, no matter how absolutely minuscule and insignificant the violence is, it is still violent. The proper response, if someone was so enraged, would be to speak out against what this person was saying. Taking out an improvised water gun and squirting someone with it achieves nothing.

This tbh

If you want to prove the guy wrong, let him dig his own grave of idiocy.

Don't go attacking him for saying stuff you don't like.

It still is a physical reaction to what someone is saying, which is still bad.

It also gives the speaker more publicity, as no newspaper would have reported on it if this didn't happen.

Not really. If someone is saying something bad that you disagree with, and you feel passionate enough to take physical action against them, would it not be better to just speak out against them later? Squirting someone with lavender oil didn't help anything.

Sorry, fam, but shutting down a person's freedom of speech means you're oppressing them.

But sure, tell me how oppressed you are as you limit someone else's rights.

Speaking out against them later doesn't really do anything, as their message has already been spread and, undoubtedly, somebody's buying into it. I'd prefer a complete nonphysical approach of heckling and whatnot, to be honest, but I don't think a nonviolent physical approach is all that bad, all things considered.

Yeah, actually. Ideology was all that was at play here. Nothing more than words right up until these degenerates tried to make it physical.

Yeah, it's literally totally definitely ideology and nothing else at play that could've spurred a reaction from people who were quite literally being told they don't exist. Right. Definitely. Uh huh.
