Couple of things - this article is 11 years old, irrelevant information now. Furthermore, it explicitly talks about how most major industries in Venezuela are nationalized or under heavy state control, and that this frustrates business community.

For those who didn't read the article (like Mettaton), it is about how some businesses have been able to keep themselves afloat in spite of conditions and how Chavez is was considering allow a little more private enterprise (which never materialized).

So you think that assault is acceptable political action?

I meant that they prohibit more than just illegal things, in practice.

Bear Stearns wrote:The point is, websites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are the primary sources of information and public discourse for millions of people. Facebook goes even further by acting as a sort of "internet passport", as in you need a facebook account to access many services on the internet. Because of this, suppressing people from them for their views is fairly tyrannical and can have huge impacts on certain groups of people.

True.

Bear Stearns wrote:If you think the internet would be a "nightmare" because people would be able to have free discourse, then that is your problem, not the public's.
It would more of the public's problem than mine, since I am but one user. The more cancerous internet that would exist in your scenario would be affecting the public rather than just me.

Bear Stearns wrote:If people want to have spaces that are more restricted, they are free to do that (for example, NationStates would still be able to ban people as it wishes), but you cannot restrict the rights of the public as a whole.

The public as a whole aren't restricted. It's the subsection of assholes that ruin the experience for everyone.

Bear Stearns wrote:Also, you actually think it's morally okay for telecom giants to cut off your phone service because they disagree with your views? Should the electric company be able to shut your power off too? Should banks be able to deny you services because of your views? Without these things, you're basically fucked in a developed economy.

If you're using your phone service to broadcast point-of-no-return views like "Kill all __", yes, that telecom giant is morally in the clear to cut off your service. Electric companies? Nah, that's nonsensical, because you can't broadcast an opinion through pure electricity. As for banks, if your intent is to use an account to fund an organization that espouses point-of-no-return views, then yeah, they're okay denying you.

You act like these opinions on how to treat people that have ridiculous outlier views are shocking, but I think it's perfectly reasonable.

But what if you don't actually hold "kill all X" views? Who proves this? Where is the accountability?

Who decides what "point-of-no return views". Many religions hold a lot of "kill X group of people" views. Should these same companies deny them service on those grounds? Who decides what views are "cancerous"?

I would think this being Torro her words would be readily identifiable as sarcasm.

I identified it as such, and I believe my response was taking that into account. The statement "Free speech must be protected by circumventing their evil AntiFA rights to life!" is obviously saying that the right to life is more important than free speech, despite the fact that no life was currently threatened.

While what happened was unacceptable, the sensationalism surrounding it is wholly worthy of mockery. This is assault on the same level of throwing a water balloon at someone. It'll count as such in court, but practically speaking, nothing really went on.

"fine people"

More seriously there's a left-over hostility to anything remotely leftist from the Cold War that's hard baked into the current establishment. Even America's "dirty socialist liberal party" is center/center-right pretty much anywhere else.

It's stupid to do. It's inappropriate. It's not acceptable. But too many in this thread are going overboard with their descriptions of what happened to the speaker.

It is because you keep blaming capitalism for the current state of Venezuela. That isn't the case, however. An authoritarian shithole with no regards to personal freedoms (and privately-owned businesses) and blatant disregard for it's citizens while they keep stealing the money to put it in their pockets turned Venezuela into what is today. It reminds me of most communist countries.
