You say that like its a bad thing. Which doesn't make for a look good at all, fam.

It is, though I ought to clarify that I don't mean mistskes in a teleological sense. It's more that they don't seem beneficial in any way and frequently detract from the expansion of the species.

Why, because the idea that no individual is an island unto themself, that the idea that you are just as susceptible to societal forces as the most mindless, shallow, and vapid human in existence, scares you?

What's the issue with it?

It's lazy centrism that prioritizes making both sides of the argument happy and therefore inflates psycho-/sociological aspects and implies that aberrant genders aren't mistakes. It also overemphasizes gender minorities and pretends that determinism can't or doesn't address transgender people. It's not as bad of a take as full-on social constructivism, but it's not that much better.

I think it would be more accurate to say that aberrant genders are anomalous rather than mistakes, as the word mistake implies the undesirable result of deliberate action.

What a ridiculously shitty take. I don't know who that is, but I don't like them at all.

My usual take is that gender is a social construct rooted in biological sex, hormones, and/or brain gender that influences gender roles, social perception, and presentation. It often relies on how one interacts with others in the context of society and is functional as well as relational. The one fault I can perceive with my definition is that it winds up being a bit less kind to non-passing trans-people and non-binary people who do not experience dysphoria since it is positivist and, arguably, a touch too reliant on social perceptions and/or scientific evidence. But I can't really come up with a definition beyond that which isn't so exceedingly broad that it becomes ridiculous or too nebulous to be functionally and relationally useful beyond the level of the individual, rendering it less a social construct and more of a simple identity or feeling.

The word aberrant seems to say enough, no? Though it does have negative implications in some contexts. Anamolous might be the more neutral word altogether.

That's fair, I suppose.

I already fried my brain today, so I cannot think enough to have a strong opinion on this. Sorry.

You DO realize I was in agreement with you there, right?

Nope, that was not clear. My bad.

Which is like saying "I know how to make a circuit, therefore, I'm a master of how to program in C#."

Just because you are familiar with the intricacies of the hardware, does not inherently make you an expert in the software. For clarification, that you is for biologists in general, not just you specifically.

I'm not saying biologists are going to be experts by default in it (obviously; I study entomology, ffs, so I would have absolutely zero knowledge on this topic without seeking it out independently), just that it is a biological problem or at the very least is not psychological.

If its not a psychological phenomenon, then why is the first person consulted in transition an expert in the field of psychology?

Look, I'll be honest. It scares the shit out of me, too. But its a reality that we must confront head on, instead of burying our heads in the sand and acting like it doesn't exist. We're scientists, we both know that we cannot hide from the truth.

I'm not sure if I'd agree with "rooted" in biological sex and hormones, and I also have a hard time seeing how it's "less kind to non-passing trans people and non-dysphoric non-binary people". But personally, I don't see anything egregiously wrong with it.

I've updated the title and poll specially for TDOR. Today marks the 20th anniversary of the first TDOR. In this year alone, there are over 331 names. 130 in Brazil. 63 in Mexico. 31 in the US. Even one name is too many, but this is just fucking ridiculous. I look forward to a future where there are no more names to read. To a future where this day is no longer needed, except for historical context. But it feels so damn far away.

Almost 5 years ago, 17 year old Leelah Alcorn tried escaping her abusive and transphobic parents in the only way she felt she could, and implored us to fix society before she left. She'd be old enough to drink by now. And it feels like we've failed her. We've certainly failed everyone of the 331. And that's just the people we know about. God only knows how high the actual number is.

If you're not trans, but know someone who is, give them a hug (if they'll accept it). Whether or not you're trans, stay safe out there. If you're religious or spiritual, and an ally, pray. But above all, do something. Change society.

Content Warning: This is the most complete list of names I've found, also includes brief descriptions of the cause of death of the victims, so there's your warning if you're not psychologically prepared for that.

Lib-left. Antifascist, antitankie, anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist (including the imperialism of non-western countries). Christian (Unitarian Universalist). Background in physics.
Mostly a girl. She or they pronouns, please. Unrepentant transbian.
Reject tradition, embrace modernity.
People who call themselves based NEVER are.
The truth about kids transitioning.

Grenartia wrote:I've updated the title and poll specially for TDOR.

Content Warning: This is the most complete list of names I've found, also includes brief descriptions of the cause of death of the victims, so there's your warning if you're not psychologically prepared for that.

My university's GSA holds a vigil each year for this, and we recite names like so.

What's even more chilling is that I was the same age as Leelah Alcorn at the time. This day, my heart weighs with the memories of our fallen siblings.

Rest in power.

My campus's LGBT+ group has done one for the past 4 years. We typically don't read the ones from outside the US, because it really detracts from the occasion to hear a bunch of people stumble over how to pronounce Brazilian names, but we do acknowledge them nonetheless.

Leelah struck a chord with me. Thank God I was never in conversion torture like she was, but I noticed a lot of similarities between her and I that were quite striking. For instance, I considered suicide in a similar manner at 17 because I knew the family members I was living with at the time (not my parents, fortunately) wouldn't accept me for being queer. Essentially, there but for the grace of God, go I.

And she was the catalyst for me getting more involved in the community. Because maybe if someone like me, who knew what it was like to walk in her shows, was able to be visible to her, able to show her there's another way, that suicide wasn't the answer, maybe she'd still be alive today.

I actually was the one who got the ball rolling on getting my campus LGBT+ group to start doing TDOR, because of that. Because there wasn't anywhere within an hour and a half at interstate speeds that was doing it.

That's the extremely simplified version, but yes.
Basically, after Rita Hester was killed for being trans, Gwendolyn Ann Smith kickstarted Transgender Day of Remembrance as a way to remember Hester and the other victims of transphobic violence, and its been an annual event ever since. Every year, the list has gotten longer and longer, and trans women of color have been especially overrepresented in the lists.

Thanks for putting the spotlight on TDOR, Gren. And for compiling that sad, long list of murdered trans folks. :( As Auzkhia said, may they rest in power.

In all fairness, I just copypasted the list. Regardless, I share the sentiment.

Post from the Queer Theology facebook page:

The question is not "is it ok to be transgender?" but rather "How do transgender people and experiences illuminate the divine?"⠀

Trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people are beloved children of God. We are made in the image of God. God is trans.⠀

Today, Transgender Day of Remembrance, is a solemn day for our community. We honor those who came before, those who were misunderstood and rejected by the world. We remember the dead and commit to fight like hell for the living.⠀

Violence against transgender people is violence against God. We cannot abide it one minute more. Mourn and heal and weep and rage.⠀

We will not stop until the Kingdom of God is present on earth as it is in heaven. And that can only come when we are seen, respected, honored, and supported in all our divine glory.⠀

Peace and blessings.

I mean, it's pretty standard Christian rhetoric, just with trans rights added to taste.

Not really. It's overwhelmingly self-centered (and legitimately what you'd expect from a cult), instead of reaffirming "everyone is God's children and God made everyone in His image".

You also think "black lives matter" means "not all lives matter," don't you?

These aren't remotely equivalent but okay. Even if BLM did attract lots of self-centered and racist individuals and behavior when it was a thing.

Christians should love everyone, yes, because everyone is made in the image of God. But the Imago Dei goes beyond any sort of physical image, because God’s physical image is that of a Palestinian man, carpenter, teacher, and savior in the first century. God can’t be trans, because God doesn’t exist on the spectrum. He exists outside the spectrum, and the feminine and masculine language used to describe the first and third Persons of the Trinity are used to try and grasp an infinite, inherently ungraspable Being. That being said, yes, trans people are made in the Imago Dei, on a different level. They have a soul made to love, to give, to worship, and to comprehend mysteries such as God. Just like any non-trans person. That’s the Imago Dei.
