Yes, but it costs a lot of money, requires recovery time, and cannot be obtained until 18, and trans people should not have to overcome those obstacles merely for basic gender recognition from the government. And not every trans person even wants SRS, so.

Also, even for those who do get SRS, sperm and egg preservation are things that are done.

Great!

If only I had netflix...

Of course it is. Its Donald Trump. All the carcinogens from whatever he uses to color himself orange have leached into his brain.

To go after a group his party and base hates, but at least democrats have a foothold to challenge the president, though the senate is one challenge too.

In this case, economic sanctions. Ideologically speaking, culturally integrating Japan with the west, exercising the harmful parts of their culture and adapting the positive. But that’s impractical. So for now, exporting soft power and western values.

That’s awesome if it happens. One doesn’t really see much programming targeted for trans people. I’d really love several informative projects on trans people, their history, their struggles and achievements. Life pieces, in which one can listen to trans people’s experiences.

Economic sanctions would be negative from a geopolitical perspective, serve to sow resentment toward the LGBTQ+ community, and on a more personal level, as someone who's trans and has family & friends who live in Japan, I just can't stress how awful the idea is.

The rest is just cultural imperialism which arrogantly presupposes that the Western world doesn't have its own problems of transphobia in the government and culture.

Given the geopolitical situation, the nature of Japan, and the fact that there are many countries doing much worse, quiet behind the scenes talks are best for this.

Agreed. Better to keep things quiet before blowing it up and making others hostile; it makes for easier concessions.

Absolutely this.

And additionally, those who'd like to frame the promotion of trans rights as 'exporting western values' better bear in mind that (as Ifreann pointed out) Japan's policies are rooted in European theories on eugenics.

Yes. That’s why I said that it wasn’t practical.

The fastest way towards building a worldstate without blood is removing the cultural and economic barriers between nations as much as possible.

I didn’t say that. But the problems of the West are not as bad as the Japanese ones.

There is a difference between some random Middle Eastern dictatorship, where this is par for the course in a menagerie of horrors, and a first world country.

Well if you admit it is not practical, what do you suggest we actually do?

And I would rather antagonize some crappy dictatorship than Japan anyways.

Yeah, that’s feasible. No advantages to local or global stability than to think about here!

Some local news from near where I live that I thought you folks might find interesting:

A series of green traffic signals along the Pride parade route in Edinburgh have been replaced with a range of diversity images.

Four designs have been created to represent lesbian, gay, trans and straight relationships, using recognised gender symbols on 35 lights.

Edinburgh Pride will march through the streets on Saturday.

Not unlike the homophobic law repealed in Botswana last week, which was a remnant of British colonial times.

This just to say that in a lot of places around the world, these kind of cisheterosexist policies are not indigenous, but remnants of that very western cultural imperialism that you are hailing as a solution.

Yeah there are a lot of British English words that don't really make sense when used in American English, and vice versa.

Yeah, it's basically TERFs pressing the devolved government to stop, UK has a lot of transphobic powerful people in it sadly.

I've had people assume I have Egyptian or Iranian roots because of that sphinx in my flag, so I should have known better I guess.

I knew England has its problems, politically speaking, but (possibly because i have a couple of good friends who originally are from Scotland) I guess I've been idealizing Scotland too much. :(
