Last night, at the helpline, a caller asked me to refer to them as “it” and I just... I just couldn’t. I know it was their chosen pronoun but I just couldn’t. I felt like I was treating them like a thing and not a person. They, however, were supremely sweet and understood and appreciated my hesitation. We compromised and I just went for the neutral “them”. Has this ever happened to anyone here and what did you do?

You dealt with it very well. I've only come across this once in real life and my response was to walk away from the conversation at the next possible opportunity and avoid them for the rest of the evening.

I use it/its, but only around people that I know, especially if they're trans and non-binary. However, with strangers, I only ask that they use she/her for me, though I don't always have to ask as I come of as feminine so that's good. It/its pronouns can be used in a real and legitimate way, I'd just use its pronouns if I were in that situation. Don't project onto it and let it express itself. I understand that other people hangups around people using it/its for itself.

Yes I associate the word "it" with being related to objects, and nonsentient/nonsapient beings, i.e. not people, so I'd feel awkward using that word in reference to a person.

Because of the nature of the helpline and because many times the calls are emergencies, I felt asking questions about their chosen pronoun wasn’t really apt. However, I’m reading a few testimonies from transgender people who prefer the “it” pronoun and why just to understand that a bit better.

She just took a random trans woman and threw her under the bus for absolutely no reason considering she was doing exactly what Blaire White thought she should.

He will commit to lgbtq rights, which have been eroded and could get worse if Biden and the Democrats do not take the White House and all of Congress respectively.

I voted for Bernie in the primary, yet again, and still voted for the nominee, Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020. All democrats down ballot. Though I kinda wanted to vote green for some statewide offices but decided against it as I want to make sure the executive branch of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania is all democratic. I hope my vote unseats the GOP state representative my area has and the state senate seat remains democratic. The republicans are holding back so many rights and reforms back here in PA.

It’s not uncommon for people to not feel satisfied by how they sound. It’s probably not comparable because of the vocal coaching you’re going through, but I truly hate the sound of my voice on a microphone. It’s uncomfortable to me for some reason.
