Maybe I read wrong, but the idea that priests assaulting minors is directly linked to the fact that they "prefer boys" (read: are gay) is deploying the old, frustrating trope of "gay men are pedophiles".

Sexual contact with minors is wrong. This frame and explicit comparison both a) reinforces an old homophobic trope (for functionally no reason beyond making a callous joke about sexual assault) and b) misframes sexual assault as an issue of sex rather than power.

Or maybe it's just an observation of the fact that the overwhelming majority of the historic sexual abuse cases have been homosexual in nature.

Not sure how we can substantiate the claim that the overwhelming majority of historic sexual abuse cases are... anything. There's not exactly data or evidence. (Maybe someone has come up with a model that forecasts/predicts somehow, but you haven't provided it. If one did exist, I'd be curious on a purely academic level what methodology they used.)

Particularly city states with a population of about 1000, are the seat of one of the world's most major religions, and is a 0.17 square mile area within a European capital.
