Many people in the south dislike Yankees (as Northerners are called) because of the Civil War (among other things). You can find many people use 'Yankee' in a negative way.

Were people complaining about the Indians because they dislike Indians? No. They were complaining because they thought the name was offensive to Indians.

If you're going to complain about the Yankees, you should complain about how unpopular they are with actual Yankees. "Yankee" is widely used in New England as a regional demonym with no negative connotations, hence Yankee Candle and other such things.

Buddy, I'm from the south and my favorite team is the Yankees. So give it a rest.

Also, what do you think we are down here? Believe it or not, we have other interests/concerns that aren't related to the Civil War.

I meant team names that might offend some. It is an insult to tradition to change the Cleveland Indians name. Think of the great Indians teams in the past and the legends that played for them. The 1948 and 1954 Indian teams are among the best teams of all times. Think of legends associated with the team name like Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby, Early Wynn, and Joe Sewell.

If just one person has a valid reason to be offended by the Yankees team name, it must be changed because in today's woke culture it is vital to avoid offending everybody. I am sure I could find at least one person that finds the Yankees team name offensive.

The Confederate States of America used the Y-word as an insult as well. In fact, the Y-word is still used today in the South, to refer — usually in a disparaging manner — to Northerners.

"Yankee" is not always a slur, and calling it "the Y-word" as if it's too offensive to spell out is fucking dumb. The South does not own the word "Yankee." You did not invent it. You don't use it to self-identify. If you use it in an insulting way, you are not the target of the insult so you are not in a position to judge how offensive it is.

It is more like "Indians" than "Redskins." "Redskin" is a clear-cut slur, whereas "Indian" and "Yankee" both have some legitimate non-offensive uses.

You can go ahead and spell out "Masshole" too if you ever want to use that one. You don't need to call it "the M-word."

That's why they have no incentive to change the name. New England would still hate them because it's full of Red Sox fans.

It is a big league like the Japanese Baseball League but likely not the equal of the MLB. It might be like a AAA level league. Some players were top level and would have competed well with major leaguers but many others would likely be AAA or AA level as in the Japanese league. MLB is making an empty gesture here and should just simply recognize it as a separate but strong league.

It is unfortunate that we will never know for sure what percent of Negro League players would have made the MLB.

Just as many star baseball players played in AAA or in the Japanese Baseball League. However, it doesn't mean 100% of them are major league level players. Of course, it will be impossible to compare now because we can't go back in time and integrate the league. However, after integration, most negro league players were not called to the big leagues and the league ended up disbanding. This tells me that perhaps 70-80% would not have made the big leagues. An average AAA or Japanese Baseball League player is still an outstanding player and much better than 99.99999% of the population can hope to be and I am not trying to insult them. However, it doesn't mean all of them are MLB material.

I agree with this and you made a good point about the random girl (or possibly a sister). Also, what if a guy if with his mistress or playing hooky from work? This could cause awkward moments.

It is impressive that he could pitch effectively in the majors in his mid 40's. A lot of men use the excuse of being 40 for not exercising and being obese. Phil Niekro, Julio Franco, Satchel Paige, Nolan Ryan, and Jamie Moyer show that being 40 is no excuse for not being fit. They are inspiring.

I find it a bit sad that Phil Niekro never got to play in the world series.

This is a warning to be VERY careful about posting on social media (especially when using your real name) and sending texts (which can be used against you).

The Mets should not have fired him for what he did in his personal time as long as he did not use a work phone for it. They should have made a general statement than the organization does not approve of sending pornographic pictures on the internet or by text but it is not responsible for the actions of employees in their personal time.

Except it was in his role of GM he sent the texts to the reporter. As an officer of thr company if thr reporter sued for harassment both he and the diamondbacks would have been libel for the payout.

Don Sutton, a right-handed pitcher who won 324 games over 23 years for five teams, most notably the Los Angeles Dodgers, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998, died on Monday night at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 75.

The Hall of Fame said the cause was cancer.

“He worked as hard as anyone I’ve ever known and he treated those he encountered with great respect,” his son Daron Sutton said on Twitter, adding, “He took me to work a lot.”

Sutton’s major league career began with the Dodgers in 1966. He went on to win 233 games during 16 seasons with the team, the most in franchise history.

“When you gave him the ball, you knew one thing,” the former Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda, who died this month, once said. “Your pitcher was going to give you everything he had.”

Sutton also pitched for the Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, California Angels and Oakland A’s before retiring in 1988. He was elected to the Hall of Fame on his fifth attempt.

Another great from my childhood bites the dust. The man just had poise and class oozing out of every pore in his body. A true hero, both as a baseball player, and as an expression of the civil rights movement.

Remember he came into the league less than 10 years after Jackie Robinson

I don't consider myself a big baseball fan, but dang if I don't admire this man, on and off the field. To accomplish everything that he did (with no asterisks!) in the face of discrimination and death threats, and to consistently play at the highest level for twenty years, many lesser people would have broken under the pressure.

A true hero and inspiration. RIP Hank, you will live forever.
