NUCLEAR WINTER.

Morbid, maybe. But think about what it would mean. No war, no corruption, no corporatism, no government coercion, no racism, no poverty, no unemployment, no conflict between religions, no hunger (well cuz there will be no one to be hungry), no crime, no murderers, no disease or STDs (yeah, one who survives will have radioactive burns and massive radiation overdoses in the body; but they will die before they can "infect" anyone)

I know what I am speaking of is out of the ordinary, but think about it for a minute. ;)

No dictators are ever benevolent; power corrupts.

So, distributing power as widely as possible is a good idea.

Leave people alone. Give them options and resources but do not force them to accept your "help".

Small is beautiful. No big government and no big business. No merger mania.

The Progressives of a century ago had three helpful thoughts: recall, initiative, referendum.

Have a common currency and shared major arteries of transportation; control broadcast media (not content) to allow smaller stations to find an audience.

Subsidiarity; handle things at the lowest possible level. Do not swat a fly with a sledge hammer. One application of this would be to handle things like education, and marriage laws, at no higher than a state level.

Resources belong to the region of origin. If others want their water, for instance, they must pay fair market value for it and not rely upon eminent domain.

Have a narrow definition of "national interest". If an international crisis does not fall within that definition, ignore it. Let other nations react if it concerns them, and allow NPO response.

This.

Plus, the societies are compassionate and kind to people from other areas, clean areas, green and eco-friendly and ultimaately a combination of the architecture of old, the futuristic andd the present all aesthetically pleasingly melded into one.

Right, so the Scottish author Iain M Banks created this series of sci-fi novels based around a post-scarcity civilisation called The Culture, which is an essentially anarchist society overseen by hyper intelligent totally benevolent AI called Minds which ensure that all of it's citizens can satisfy all their material wants, allowing them to spend all their time engaged in whatever activities they personally find fulfilling. Everyone can change their sex and physical form to whatever they want on request, everyone can be as kinky and debauched as they want, and the only particular risk is boredom, which can be staved off by going to work for Contact and helping them engage in diplomacy with/perform espionage against/annihilate other civilisations.

Humanity's dismantled the solar system and built a Matrioshka Brain around the Sun. Most of the population has voluntarily uploaded themselves into an endless, perfect series of virtual worlds, where scarcity and conflict are absent unless all involved consent. People can retreat to their own private sanctums if they wish, or communicate at trillions of times faster than real time with every human who's ever been uploaded. Animals have been uplifted to sentience and invited to join the great simulated realm, too, because why the hell not.

Meanwhile, the superintelligent AIs running the Brain are using its excess computational power to crack the entropy problem and ensure the survival, happiness, and prosperity of an infinite number of minds for the rest of eternity. They're sending probes out to other stars, and humans who aren't uploaded will augment themselves for radiation resistance and immortality, then tag along to see what new planets they can find. These other stars are being harvested for additional energy, used as power sources for additional brains... and the cycle continues, because one brain might not be enough to figure out real paradise and we need every single chance we can get.

Sounds like it could get quite boring quite fast if those kinds of things Literally Did Not Exist. I'm also not sold on the idea of democracy, though that's a different topic for a different thread. Would your utopia also have lots of really hot girls, just like mine? :D

I like a lot of what's written here, but again, I still think people are missing the fact that the dictator is still taking public opinion into consideration and can be kicked out if he leaves the bounds of the constitution. I also seriously think this idea still has too much governmental power; I'm a proponent of the "nightwatchman government", which is the libertarian ideal of a very small and non-intrusive government focusing solely on defense and law enforcement, allowing people the freedoms to do and decide what they want as long as they aren't interfering with other people's freedoms to do the same.

Honestly, I'd like to blow up a society like that too. As a technophobe, that would basically be one of my fears realised.

Also, to me, utopia implies constant progress toward a better society for future generations, not stagnation at some hypothetical "perfect" point. The latter would become extremely boring fast without anything to discuss or overcome; a bit of realism (some may say adversity, but it doesn't have to be negative) adds character and variety to day-to-day life, hence why in my utopia, people still work 40-hour weeks (though not 60-100 hour weeks), among other examples. Utopia is more about "always improving" rather than "stuck at a set point".

Post-post apocalyptic wonderland, radioactive ash washed into the deep ocean and below a new layer of topsoil not laced with microplastics and fencepost arsenic. Even the former concrete jungles have turned green. Drinking water doesn't cause gyno, coal and oil mysteriously absent from the Earth's crust, aspartame and sucralose mysteriously absent from the water table and ocean. Bill Gates' technocapital fuhrerbunker in New Zealand is torched the second SHTF, his harem of prepubescent girls is freed and allowed to live normal lives. Nobody uses the word "progress".
