I first visited Notre Dame in 1998. I've visited again several times over the years (most recently in 2016) and have always been awed by the rose windows (now gone), the spire (gone), and the flying buttresses (currently under threat).

I have always held mixed feelings on Viollet-le-Duc's restoration works but the draw of Notre Dame as a symbol for the city and the country is undeniable.

A very sad day.

When I first heard of it on fire I assumed a jihadist had set the fire, something that is most likely unfair. A dropped cigarette is far more likely to be the cause.

Oh absolutely. I visited the Bauhaus a couple of years ago; it got bombed to shit during the war, but you can't even tell now, because the reconstruction work was so good. It's guaranteed that Notre Dame will rise again too.

Even if it could be rebuilt, all the artwork and the historic relics that have burned and I'd argue the similar French Gothic style cannot be replicated and replaced. Seeing a piece of history, one that gets millions of visitors per year is one of the most heartbreaking things to see.

I could be mistaken but the issue with Notre Dame is that there aren’t, iirc, masons who are capable to work in the styles the cathedral is made. I’m sure that can be taught but I don’t know.
