You want to know what I'm finding sad? The reaction some people are having in social media. Criticizing those who are talking about this incident but don't talk about Syria or Native American art being lost. And as much as I empathize with Syrian refugees and Native American art that's been lost, I also empathize with Notre Dame burning. I've been there. I was raised Catholic, and even though I am not practicing it or identify as Catholic, ND's is a treasure to many people.
I wish, and I realize people have opinions and are entitled to them and can talk about them in their FB or Twitter or whatever, I wish that we didn't always resort to that when a tragedy happens. Then again, it's social media. Someone will always rain on someone else's parade.
You should see some of the Atheist threads I've seen on FB...better yet, don't see them because it's really depressing to see what blind hated of something can lead to. Not all of them or even most of them, of course, but a few people are spoiling it for everyone. I'm a proud Atheist, and I am relieved and proud to see Notre Dame survive a literal trial by fire.

Indeed they can. We must remember that very little of what Notre Dame was was actually original save for the stone and the ceiling, even the spire only dates back to Napoleon III's reign. The biggest loss has been the rose windows, and even they can be reclaimed in time.

Photos appear to show that at least one of the cathedral's famed rose windows has survived, although there are concerns for some of the other stained-glass windows.

The Rose windows are a trio of immense round stained-glass windows over the cathedral's three main portals that date back to the 13th century. The Archbishop of Paris said all three have been saved, reports CNN affiliate BFM TV.

TL;DR: Paris is not as romantic as Japanese think. It's quite a dirty place.
