from initial photos it seems ok but it will take days to determine the full extent of the damage.

Quite right too. Firemen are some of the world's most upright folk. They deserve a crate of beer each.

I thought Catholicism only did alcohol during Mass. Or maybe I'm just projecting wine onto all alcohol, idk.

Judging by the French chatter they are speculating that the main rose window may have made it but the north and south ones burst in the heat.

The superstructure held and that is indeed good.

I'm not even talking about the superstructure. While part of the roof collapsed and I am sure there is probably smoke and water damage, it looks like a lot of decorative stuff survived as well, at least from the pictures. Also, I wonder if the people who worked on the national cathedral after the earthquake in DC will work on restoring this.

The sad thing is, I can picture that smug git saying something like that.

I don't think we could 3D print Notre Dame at all. We don't have printers that can construct at that scope. And yes, 3D houses are a thing but this... this is a whole 'nother animal. If Macron said something like that, wow. I don't think he would though.

I think people are just trying to remain positive. It is truly sad that we lost the Rose Window, it really is. And no, you're right, it wasn't just glass. But it's gone. All we can do now is hope a replica is made so we can show it to future generations.

Indeed. I have mourned today in silence to one of Catholicism's greatest architectural marvels, tho I haven't cried openly for it. But I would like to think it will get repaired and future generations will get to enjoy the cathedral, hopefully better and more glorious than we enjoyed it.

That's pretty much all we can do regarding the Rose Window. Convey what it meant and showcase a replica so we can show it to the future generations.

A lot of my friends who have been to France feel a terrible pang of sadness. Imagine that? Non-French people, Catholic and not, also feel the depth of the tragedy that has just unfolded. This event is a collective trauma, and the whole world now mourns with France. I'll be saying a few prayers in the meantime, as I can do little but pray.

Agreed, and I also think that given this is a historical monument (and religious building) that is somehow......unethical? I don't know, maybe just my feelings.

Ok I got reported for saying this:

I'd just like to clarify that this is not an actual quote from Macron, this is completely faked.

Any word on the stuff around the Cathedral, like the garden or something? I hope the fire didn't spread and cause more damage then it needed to.

What the heck are you talking about? It's not a bloody meal if it's not accompanied by at least two bottles of wine or a keg of decent ale and not finished off whisky or some other evening digestif. We're not bloody protestants. Good Lord.

In the short term they are likely going to need to put a massive plastic wrap over Notre Dame to stop rain ingress, and use industrial dehumidifiers to get the damp out after they have pumped out the majority of the water.
