Why is it lousy? You can get culture by simply driving/taking the train in, while you can also have a yard for the kids to get outdoors easily.

I lived in Chicago for four years and loved it, and would hate to see this happen.

But it would be quite fitting for Philly or NYC; let them stop stealing our clean water. Go find your own, and pay a fair price for it. Raise your own food while you are at it.

Chicago was vibrant and energetic. Much friendlier than NYC. Lots of jobs. Lot of free entertainment! Dozens of ethnic neighborhoods with great food, art, and culture.
But the air and water tasted bad, and you could never see the stars at night. Maybe a few from the Navy Pier (but no longer),

Actually in the US manufacturing is often done in suburban and rural areas. Factory workers can afford cars here and land is cheaper.

Indeed, in the US, manufacturing is split roughly 50-50 between urban areas and surburban/rural ones. I looked it up for some other thread where the OP was arguing that big cities were the be all and end all of human existence, and people should be shoved into them.

Well the railroads actually were originally private until the government drove them out of business.
In Florida a private company is building one.

It depends on what city your referring too. Have you even been to a city or are you just generalizing? Cities are filled with museums, historical sites, sports arenas, convention centers. What makes your small town better?
