Pretending the mainstream GOP has anything useful to say about Omar at this point dips into the realm of absurdity. She's their new boogeyman. It'll get more and more petty and more and more outlandish until we're dealing with Hillary 2.0 level conspiracism.

Dude pizza gate was a 4 chan meme that some really dumb people fell for it isn't really relevant

When it assumes the velocity of the rest of a quarter-century's worth of Clinton jeremiads, then yes, yes, it's relevant alright.

Maybe being Muslim is a policy in itself in the view of the GOP.

"Muslims are anti-American infiltrators, unless they're Saudi royalty willing to buy multi-million dollar weapons at which point they're loyal allies."

She's not an Islamist. Or maybe she is and just not showing it :) Hopefully the latter.

It's like you're trying to go out of your way to justify the attacks against her and other Muslims.

Clumsy, ill-advised wording by Omar, who I don't very much like as a politician. That said, an incident of tone-deafness on word choice is a very different thing to being a secret terrorist supporter. Trump's wild and massively overreaching insinuations are divisive and liable to needlessly stir racial tensions. In normal times where we expected the President to act like an adult, that would be the much bigger scandal.

Has it occurred to you that most of people don’t want to get stoned or beheaded.

Didn't one of those dumb people go to the actual pizza place with a gun.. these things have consequences. And while one can't really stop idiots sharing conspiracy theories and stirring up hatred we shouldn't have a president being one of those idiots.

This. The Republican Party is trying to get her killed by spewing ridiculous shit at her 24/7 and hoping something sticks.

That's been like 100% of his presidency though.

Representative Omar was on Christopher Hasson's hitlist. If he hadn't been busted in the planning stage he most certainly would have tried to gun her down.

And I wonder why a dislike for one politician, contrasted with a much stronger distaste for another on the other side of the aisle, is causing you to develop such a chronic case of ocular swiveloo.

It's a wonderful, wonderful world.

Dude please just quit it with trying to make it seem like everyone who disagrees with Omar is a racist. Many people don’t like her not because she is a Muslim but because they maybe don’t like her policy or her poor phrasing of things.

Kinda neutral on this.

On the one hand, Omar should've worded her statement better.

On the other, getting massively outraged at a poorly worded statement comes off as petty.

If you disagree with her politics, go after that.

We are not talking about hate here. She is largely a generic progressive. The only other regard than this clumsy word choice that has ever had her pop up on my radar is in some similar fumbled choice of words on Israel. In this regard she appears to calculate poorly when discussing controversial issues and be a bit of a liability.

Other than that, my criticism would be the same as that of other progressives, a facile and identity-focused analysis of inequality that is easily coopted by elites, and can only ever deliver the kind of modest returns on class-related issues that the next opposition candidate will have no trouble reversing. As such, the progressive strategy ultimately delivers zero to minimal lasting benefits to the average member of the working class, whether they be white, black, male or female.

My opinion as an outsider is that she is politically clumsy, her fervour is directed towards the wrong issues, and she is part of a political grouping that I find limited and a bit frustrating. But there is quite the gulf between "not like" - the opinion I have expressed - and "hate" - a word you seem to have reached deep inside your intestinal tract for in order to yank it straight out through your anus.

That or easily offended Zionists are trying to silence her.

You really have to go a long way to justify attacking a Somali Muslim immigrant that has already been the target of death threats.

My opinion as an outsider is that she is politically clumsy, her fervour is directed towards the wrong issues,

Standing up for minorities is wrong?

I don’t hate the lass, but in a attempt to appease both Muslim and American alike she has (by poor wording and a poorly thought out speech) marginalized the disaster of 9/11. That’s a feature that’s leaves a distasteful opinion of someone.

You have not made any attempt to substantively engage with any of the points other posters have made, Druulis. All you have offered is "but she's from a minority" and "she supports minorities", as if her background and her being on a particular political side is not only an unbreakable shield against criticism of bad choices of words, but also constitutes an active obligation for everyone to support her and to like her regardless of their political allegiance.

As I said in my original post, Trump is by far the worse offender of the two in this controversy because Omar only made a clumsy and ill-considered stumble whereas Trump's response actively sought to stir up racial tensions, but Omar being from a minority and arguing for the rights of minorities does not mean that her words weren't ill-advised and it does not offer everyone the binary choice of unconditionally loving her and her politics or being a racist. Right?

1) We were talking about 9/11, not racial discrimination.

Well?

1) Discrimination significantly increased after 9/11. For example; I remember a Sikh was shot as the person thought he was a terrorist.
2) He might be worthy of a look over as the Republicans like to complain about the race card and where rather slow to take actions against this guy.

They don't like her policies of standing up for minorities?

You do know she has many other policies other than that right? They could disagree with her proposed cuts to the military, or disagree with the feasibility of free college or making the minimum wage 15 an hour. You do realize she has more policies than just standing up for minorities, right? Stop continually trying to shut down any people who have criticisms of her by desperately trying to frame them as just being racist.
