I wouldn't have the foggiest about "white cultural heritage", but I don't think these people's skin color are the main contributor to their personal identity. It's mainly because these people were confined to themselves and their own in the past, forming a tight community. See it as a "nation within a nation" if you will. I'm strained to believe that black people in the UK would share all that much culturally with black people in the US, so I feel this survey wrongly presents the weight of this variable.

What people call racial heritage is to me an infranational cultural heritage. I'm sure people with an Italian heritage in the US can also still strongly associate themselves with an Italian cultural heritage. Their race doesn't quite matter that much there.

It's just easy to use skin color as a distinguisher, but it's overly simplistic.

This may be even more true for races that have historically been harshly oppressed, such as Blacks (who display the highest percentage in this study) with slavery and segregation, which obviously makes them develop a stronger sense of racial consciousness due to the hardships they have endured.

Because the slave masters forbade them to practice much of their culture, and since they consider it an existential threat to them and their identity, the Blacks had to improvise, adapt, and overcome. Same thing with the Germans regarding the perceived Jewish menace, thus we had WW2.

On the other hand, I also believe that Whites may have unfortunately been led to learn, over the past few decades, that their racial pride and their sense of racial consciousness was less valid than other races' because of their traditional position of relative privilege in the West compared to minorities.

Others have already mentioned it. Self-criticism is not hate. The 'self-hate' that people say, I perceive more as overweening concern that society will repeat the mistakes of the previous generation. Of course there would be those who are misguidedly zealous and are prone to hypercorrection. The positive contributions of the Whites as part of Western civilization is something to celebrate with. The thing is, as I understand it, membership in Western civilization isn't supposed to be determined by your race. It's a set of ideals that anyone can subscribe to.

As someone who greatly values racial diversity and pride for all peoples, I think it's unfortunate that certain groups may have lost their sense of racial identity - but what is your take on that, NSG? Can other factors than the ones I have presented explain this phenomenon? Is it better that no one or, on the contrary, everyone be attached to their racial heritage? Do you believe this situation must be solved in the first place, or do you think that the loss of racial consciousness for certain groups can have a positive impact? Discuss.

I think the most important lesson is that your race should not determine your future choices or your self-worth. If you think that you're going against the pigeon hole society associates your race with, don't be afraid. Race is not the sole or even majority contributor into you as a person. Of course with the obvious disclaimer that it's as long as you don't deny others' rights and freedom.

Turns out that minority groups think their race is important to them when their race was used as a tool to oppress them in various ways for several hundred years.

Also, there is no real White American(tm) identity. The reason that we see, say, black pride in the US develop is because of a unified history and culture (i.e. one of oppression and hardship). Whiteness as an identity is skin-deep, pun intended.

Whites did have a unified history in culture in the U.S... It's called American history and culture. However any semblance of white identity has been eroded away by an acidic consumerist culture and a capitalist society. That is the ultimate tragedy of the white American, they lack identity. You need an identity to be motivated. The identity held humanity together and split it apart for 200,000 years, like sediment building up and crumbling away. The urge to help your tribe, your group. The urge to pick your group over others. When you have no group, no identity, the only thing left to work towards is the things the higher ups in society want you to look for. Money, temporary pleasure, a meaningless promotion.
