The AU threatens revoke every other member states membership every couple of years. Nothing to be surprised about.

If it gets revoked, they'll be back in a few years.

Also funny that the AU was okay with 30 years of military rule, and only now is complaining about military rule.

Not that the AU matters anyways.

Military dictatorship?
"Cool!"
Genocide in Darfur?
"Right on!"
Stole millions from public funds?
"Who doesn't nowadays?"
New Military Dictatorship?
"Hold on a second, we don't do this sort of thing in the African Union."

Bashir has been moved to prison

I wonder if the new government will hand him over to the ICC?

The new government are the ones who did the things that would make him wanted by the ICC

It's not that they supported it, it was more of a matter of keeping status quo.

Bashir played a pretty important role in the genocide, but yes a lot of the military establishment is also culpable and will probably try and save their own skin by offering Bashir up.

When the status quo is a military dictatorship supporting the status quo is obviously supporting a military dictatorship.

Holy shit:

I think it's likely now that Sudan is becoming a democracy.

Unless you think the protesters are mere matryoshka dolls hiding the coup plotters underneath, I have to unload all my doubt on this one.

He's just mad that the Arab-inclined despot was replaced. Of course, I still doubt there'll be democracy in the immediate future of Sudan though (maybe, if nothing goes wrong and nobody invades anything, in the next 5-10 years they'll have a hybrid regime inching towards a functional flawed democracy, but they'll be the same authoritarian state for the next 5-10 years at least)

Well, it seems that after weeks of deadlock and wrangling over how best to transition to a transition (protest leaders want a predominantly civilian transition towards a secular democratic Sudan, the military wants preeminent control over any governing body that may be formed plus a decidedly Islamic cast to any future laws to be implemented), it seems that the military has invited the leaders of the Declaration of Freedom and Change Forces -- clunky name, but fuck it -- for what it and evidently Al-Jazeera calls "decisive talks" to finally ensure a smooth transition.

I dunno -- one part of me can't but reflect back to General Ackbar screeching, the other bady wishes for good, democratic news, for the people of Sudan, for me, and for the people of Sudan. This fucking around has got to stop. It has to.

Well, things don’t seem to be going terribly...yet.
