Military Coup in Sudan topples President Omar Al-Bashir

Postby San Lumen » Thu Apr 11, 2019 8:01 am

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-47891470

Longtime President of Sudan Omar al Bashir who has ruled since 1989 has been removed via a military coup according to the military. There have been protests for several months calling for his removal. Over the years Bashir has been become increasingly dictatorial and has been accused of outright fraud in national elections and suppressed opposition. His current location is unknown

Defense Minister Awad Ibn Ouf said a state of emergency has been put in place and says the military will oversee two year transition period followed by elections. He apologized for the dictatorial nature of the regime and released all political prisoners.

While it is good news he's been removed after what happened in Egypt I'm skeptical of Sudan becoming a free republic. Its rare for the military to fully relinquish power after a coup but we will have to wait and see.

Your thoughts on this NSG?

Well releasing the political prisoners was a good move, but we will see how this "transition period" will really turn out.

Damn and I thought the protests would lead to a civil war, never thought a coup would occur. I hope this will lead to Sudan becoming a democracy.

I hope so too but military coups dont have a great record of leading to democratic countries.

Eh. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Hopefully the military transition government can lead to, if not democracy, at least a better future for Sudan.

I wonder if Omar al Bashir will "accidentally" die while in custody?

It will be interesting to see if they turn over bashir to the icc given he is wanted on genocide and crimes agianst humanity charges. Possibly a new government seeking to gain greater international recognition and support might be tempted to do so although this may have the counter effect of creating a backlash among other higher ranking military officials who could fear for themselves.

Still i share the op's sceptiism regarding a democracy in sudan given the recent events in Zimbabwe. Unlike Zimbabwe however, i'm not sure who could fill thevoid of strong man in sudan, which is both good, in that it may prevent the military from reasserting rule and allow a democratic process to occur, and bad, as may also lead to infighting and state collapse by the military. Its worth noting that sudan is a fairly fragile state with a lot of non state military forces in operation, so the risk of state collapse is a serious one, not only for sudan but its neighbours as well.

Now this came in as a shock. First Zimbabwe then this. I am skeptical about the new junta and I doubt that they'll introduce a proper democracy in Sudan.

The Defense Minister and leader of the transitional government could fill the void.

First Assange has been arrested now Bashir has been overthrown, today has been quite eventful in world politics.

I personally hope he doesn't. He should be Numenberg'd, not "Accidentally" gotten rid of while in custody.

The coup leaders could have picked a better date tbh, all everyone is going to be doing for the next few days is Assange and not that a dictator is overthrown. Reminds me of when there was a civil war in Gambia which occurred on the same day of Trump's inauguration.

It seems Sudan has traded one dictator for another.

I am hopeful but skeptical here. Letting out those political prisoners is a good sign but military coups don’t tend to end in democratic republics.
I do be tired

If this had occurred before the coup in Zimbabwe more people would probably be very open and happy with this action by the Sudanese military. But with Zimbabwe's dictatorship still going strong people are a bit more sceptical that this is a real change for Sudan and not just changing out an unpopular dictator for a new one.

I'm still a bit hopeful, if only cautiously so.
