What was this topic about, again? Oh, that's right. "Was the New Left a mistake?" Well, if I were to go solely by Communal concil's issues with it, I'd say no. For the most part, it certainly wasn't.

To look at it through a materialist lens, the increasing focus on civil rights and social justice within the left was a natural progression from a number of key historical events that dramatically impacted the West, and as the politically enfranchised proletariat began to encompass more groups of people than just white, straight, native-born men.

So no, it's obviously not a mistake for leftists, whether actual or revisionist, to adapt their platforms so it may represent their grievances as well. You also have, which may just be a direct byproduct of capitalism, an increasingly dynamic, consumerist, and rebellious culture to traditional social roles and norms. Against "polite society," which has generally kept varying class systems alive for all of recorded history. And this further encourages those who've been especially oppressed by these old social hegemonies.
