Tomorrow is the 15th of Sha'ban, a Shia holiday celebrating the birth of Mahdi. So, with that in mind, what is you guys' opinion on the Mahdi? I'm genuinely curious about the opinions of the different sects on the idea of aMahdi (not necessarily the same individual the twelvers consider their 12th Imam)

Not shia but find their concept of the Mahdi to be extremely interesting.

'Their' concept of Mahdi is some guy who was born 1200ish years ago and still lives inside a well in Jamkaran. I'm not sure I'd find that interesting or utterly deluded tbh.

Technically he's the reason the apocalypse comes in the first place, and his version of "Saving us" includes killing everyone except for 333 people (by some accounts anyway), but yeah. Pretty much.

The main group that actually has a "Recorded" prophecy for what'll happen in the Islamic equivalent of Armageddon also mentions that it will be a global war between evil vs. Mahdi and his 313 (I think) companions. Of course, here we have no actual certain say whether these 313 are the "commanders" or the total number, but we do know "Evil" will be eradicated, so "by some accounts", only 313 people will survive Mahdi saving us in a truly "Congratulations! You are being rescued, please do not resist" manner.

And yes. The rise of Dajjal is specifically in response to the rise of Mahdi, which makes this even more hilarious because it means the whole Armageddon happening is literally Mahdi's fault.

Like I said. That's what the Twelvers believe. I'll have you know I am no longer a twelver, and so I am in no way responsible for what they believe. The majority of the mythos around any supposed Mahdi originate from the Twelvers too (as the majority of the Sunnis either believe "Mahdi" won't be born until the Armageddon, or that he was Muhammad the prophet so uh, idk)

Well, you know who I believe the Mahdi is. That is Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as).

Just wait until you start reciting, subhan-rabiya-alazeem or in sajdah, subhana-rabiyal-ala. Feels great and power.

During this time, he was "in communication" with four people. When the last of them died in 329, he went into the Major Occulation (الغيبة الكبرى or غیبت کبری) from 329.

I mean, the actual observations are mostly celebrations, and a national legal holiday (Which is the only good thing about it. I don't have to go to university tomorrow, and I would have had a difficult exam if It wasn't a legal holiday :/). There's some talk shows about it on the National Broadcasting Channels, et al. But then again I do live in the mostly secular and religiously-indifferent North-Central Tehran. It might be different elsewhere that I don't know of.

My sister's also not a Muslim. My dad's inching towards irreligion... We're working on dismantling my mom's religiousity as well. the Parents do still fast though (they start from around the Middle of Sha'ban, ironically) though that has more of a "Health" veneer than a religious one. I'm lucky in that my family is also not religious as well. Heaven knows it would've been even more difficult to handle things if they were.
