Nice. Have fun.

Thanks! I'm having fun for now. There are many art performances tonight, and I love the traditional dances from Aceh and Papua.
Overall a nice night before Monday *shudders* :p

Nice and nice. As for me, I work today, and then I get off early to go to an election at my mosque to elect office holders.

I myself have gained a couple offices these past few months. A couple on a local level and one on a national level for the youth group of the US Jammat.

Just learned on how to read an isnad in hadith. Woohoo! Alhamdulilah. So if anyone does present me with a questionable hadith, I will use my special analyzation skills to see how the hadith was narrated.

So Pilarcraft, you're not the only one that can investigate isnads now. :p

What do you lot think about letting your children participate in non-Islamic festivities when one lives in a western country ? Like trick or treating at Halloween, fireworks at the christian new year or egghunting at easter ?

I'm fine with her participate in non-Islamic festivities here in China. Hell, I want her to stay in touch with her Chinese heritage. As for the same in western countries, I don't really care. She wants to go trick or treating, fine. If not, I don't give a damn.

Good to hear that you're finding ways to serve your community! I'd guess that your offices are a pretty big commitment, time and effort wise?

Well, if I were to have children, I don't think I'm going to restrict them from participating in such events. I don't really care. I'm just going to explain what is allowed and forbidden in Islam (if they were to be raised as Muslims) as far as I understand them, however.

I can see why Muslims might have qualms about Easter egg hunts, especially since the symbolise one of the key differences (the resurrection) between Christian and Muslim approaches to Jesus/Isa.

However, the 1st of January isn't a 'Christian new year'. The Gregorian calendar resulted from reforms of a Roman Catholic Pope, but it was based on the Julian Calendar - which predates Christianity - which was itself a reform of earlier calendar systems. The 1st of January was first fixed as the start of the new year in 45 BC immediately following the adoption of the Julian Calendar. But once the Empire adopted Christianity, the new year moved away from the beginning of January, which was only readopted as the start of the year from the 16th century onwards.

So 'Christian new year' is definitely a misnomer.

As long as they don't violate the principles of Islam, I see no problem.

I only like Halloween for the candy and I dont celebrate it otherwise.

Interesting. Do you live in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan? I ask out of curiosity, since it seems that Chinese Muslims are going through a very difficult time in the PRC right now, what with the ongoing repression of the Uyghurs.

Mainland. I'm not Chinese, I just live here. The reason I said Chinese heritage is because the woman I'm in love with is Chinese.

The gelatine used in most candies come from cows, not pigs, so we're fine.

Speaking as a vegan, they (thankfully) are switching to cornstarch and xanthan gum more and more. Still can’t eat gummy worms, though (sad).

If I had children, I'd allow them to participate in those, no harm in it really.

Is it? Well, I don't really pay much attention since I don't eat too many candies, but the ones I ate all have these halal stamps, so I'm not really worried.
Though, if I were to live in a non-Muslim majority country one day, I definitely have to pay more attention.

Not here in Cairo, it isn't.

Work has just given us (even us Christians) massive boxes of candy for Mawlid this coming weekend; there'll be a lot of disappointed people here in Egypt if that candy is haram!

And Halloween is hugely popular in Cairo, for what it's worth.

Candy, nor any other form of sweets, aren't haraam in Iran (or, really, any Shia I know of) either. We do have our sweet tooth.

Not in western Europe. Large brands like Haribo and Maoam use pig gelatin. Except in their veggie line, which is gelatin free.

Arguably cannot drink many brands of apple juice as well: gelatin is often used to make it look clear. They say nothing remains in the juice itself, but it is still used.

If I recall correctly, if no pork products are in a food or drink, it is halal.

There is also another thing that isn't talked about: How an animal is slaughtered: If an animal is brutally slaughtered, it cannot be eaten. That includes many McDonalds products. Here in the US.
