Priests burning Harry Potter and Twilight books in Poland

Postby Havarland » Tue Apr 02, 2019 8:09 am

Catholic priests in Poland burned 'sacrilegious' books this weekend including books from the Harry Potter and Twilight series.

Photographs posted on the page run by the Catholic 'SMS from Heaven' evangelical group show three priests carrying a basket of books and other items, including an African-styled face mask through a church to an outside fire pit.

'We obey the Word,' priests said in a Facebook post showing photographs of the public book burning and quoting Biblical passages from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament.

One passage exhorting believers to destroy the enemies of God includes the command to 'burn their idols in the fire'.

Priests are seen saying prayers over the fire pit where other items, including a book from the Twilight vampire-themed fantasy romance series, a 'Hello Kitty' umbrella and a Hindu religious figurine, are also burning.

'Aside from the books, there were talismans and amulets. Parishioners brought them to put things in order' as part of spring cleaning, added the priest, who is also listed as an exorcist on the Gdansk diocese official website.

As some people already mentioned:
'I'd like to believe this is a joke... Seriously? Are people burning fantasy literature in the 21st century in some kind of sick ritual?!' one Facebook user said in a comment underneath the post.

I am with them, but unfortunately there are many people who have backed this. It's unbelievable that something like this can be happening in the 21st Century's European Union.
I thought we and even Poland is moving forward, not backwards. I mean…It's surprising. Such things can only do us harm! I agree with the freedom of religion and everything, but hopefully rest of the Europe won't follow this…Oh my dear lord. Even if God existed, I think even he'd be surprised, since 'everything is created by God' including "Harry Potter".

I know I can't generalise and there are probably a lot of Polish people that are embarrassed by this, but this is just amazing… I'm speechless.

They're not actually 'Catholic priests', by the way, or at least not of the Roman Catholic variety.

They're Mariavites or Old Catholics, not sure.

Nope I was wrong. They are actual RC priests. But they're mariavites anyway.

Because this was released around April Fools, I'm reluctant to say much because you can never tell. If it's real, it's foolish. Books are not dangerous, people who are afraid of books should realize the main problem is their minds. If reading Harry Potter is going to make you worry about sacrificing a goat to Satan, maybe the problem is you and not the book.

The books deserve it

Twilight deserves it for existing, and Harry Potter deserves to be burned for the fact J.K Rowling's twitter is a thing.

Rough translation:

"I wish that in our modern times, people reacted as furiously to burning books about magic as they do about killing the unborn"

I sooooooo knew that would be the response before I even began trying to find it.

Top comment says (in a teasing manner) along the lines of 'I wish that in our modern times, godfearing priests reacted as furiously towards their peadophile brothers as they do to haunting HP readers'

Burning Twilight books should be a humanitarian duty.

Harry Potter used to be really good for me, until J.K. Rowling started to ruin it by pandering to PC ideology.

I still don't support this Harry Potter book burning, though.

But Twilight? Now that's a different story!

I am shocked. Often I've been upset, because some issues are 'unrealistic' but now…haha

It's real. Religious zealots are a thing. And if you think it's only Poland, you should google what happened in Verona last weekend.

Yeah, I figured. Part of me was skeptical because I mostly see rhetoric about “the Word” coming from Evangelicals rather than Catholic zealots.

Any questions of the books' quality aside... I say we let them be. Their actions do rather speak for themselves as to the rationality of their position.
