My other thought is it's an example of AI generated fake news. I'm sure I saw a recent article on this, where it scrapes the net for viable links and generates a false story that looks real. I mean there's not much of any substance here, no link to the actual study for example, just links and quotes that could be about anything.

Yeah, I've noticed the lack of a link to the actual study too. To me, that makes me think it's more bullshit than not at this point, but I don't know.

It wasn't just about lying though, it also talked as a measure of lying overestimating their own abilities in measurable subjects, like math

In that sense, yes I think its correct.

Well?

How many women have heard "yes I will love you in the morning?"

How many men have told the truth when answering the question of "Does this make my butt look big?"

The results, if true, aren't useful by themselves and would need further investigation and clarification by contrasting other forms of test question and so on. At best we can conclude, maybe, that Boys are more likely to say they understand a math term which is made up than Girls are.

Perhaps a smidge overly reductive. There's no other way to measure psychological and social concepts other than through indirect questioning, otherwise you get people who don't want to admit their unsavory qualities.

But the article itself (if real) admits the research on the topic is scarce.

I'm assuming this question is asked first time, seems odd to suddenly ask the question when married, bit late.. 'oh hey, by the way, I know it's 8 years into our marriage but..'

Anyway.. we digress.

Well I asked because every significant other I have had at one time or another, multiple occassions really. has asked a variation of the age old question. "Does these pants make my butt look big". At 20, I incorrectly answered the question, at 22 I regained consciousness.

Oh, I wasn't commenting on that question.. though variations on the 'do I look fat' question are indeed numerous and wholly tedious.

There's no link to the actual scientific data, no explanation of how is interpreted either.notice there is a correlation between a country's total population and how they rank on scale. I'd say there's a good chance someone did not count per capita but rather just used the raw numbers to claim that one country was more likely to be bullshitters than another. Also this one includes anglophone nations supposedly. That really doesn't say much is we don't know if it was all anglophone countries or just a select few.

The science behind this reeks of bullshit.

I agree with you but in my opinion you need to triangulate single data points to deduce something other than their immediate reductive implications in social science, or it's just a bunch of assertions.

With only one data point, you've just got a dot on a map. With a couple more you can start to gain a picture and triangulate a general truth.

Do girls lie more in other circumstances? (Yes.).

Okay, so there's something about this lie that makes boys more likely to tell it. What is it?

Well do they make up credentials in general?

And so on.

Their study of 40,000 teenagers reveals that boys; those from privileged backgrounds; and North Americans in particular, top the charts as the worst offenders.

Don't know about the "boys" part, but privileged and North American? I can buy that. We do know that increasing wealth might go hand in hand with increasing unethical behavior.

Hard to say. On the one hand, something does feel very off with this article. Especially because April 1st.

On the other hand, the method described on how to find bullshitters is actually one that has been used before (in real studies).

If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. That's.. kind of an unnecessary addition there..

Anyhoo.. there seems a lot of stories I'm questioning today, from someone flying around the world on a gyrocopter to Europe's tallest building being built in a town of 7, 000 in Denmark to a host of others.

Maybe it takes April 1st for me to see how ridiculous most of the news is in general.

Isn't this a situation were BSing is good? I mean if you are giving a test and you don't know the then BSing is the best strategy. It is the equivalent of filling in C on a multiple choice when you don't know the answer.

Also, wouldn't BSers exaggerate their income? Thus the income correlation is suspect.
