Going back to the military for a second, during the last recession the army barracks in my Irish home town was shut down and a farewell parade was held for the soldiers.
I didn't know the Irish army played bagpipes on military parades. I don't think the town knew that the Irish army played bagpipes on military parades.
How quickly an event's mood can go from "you were a hallmark of our town, we will never forget you" to "oh dear god, leave faster."

As soon as I could, I always took off on my birthday. The day before or the day after if it fell on the weekend. Now that I'm retired, every day is Saturday, so a lot of the fun in that is gone. On the other hand, I don't set my alarm clock, either.

Cultural imperialism is a cruel thing.

It takes an Irishman to really play the pipes.

I too take off my birthday. Recently I have noticed a strong desire to rage quit on my birthday, and since that would not be a good idea, i stay home instead.

Because that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Spock commonly did seem to be the more human character in the first Star Trek series with his dry sense of humor that was not supposed to be humor given his Vulcan roots, yet it was mechanical man Kirk who punched his way into the intimate embrace of many alien humanoids of the female persuasion. Kirk's sex appeal didn't work when Enterprise encountered that giant space amoeba, though.

Nonsense, bagpipes are a magnificent sounding instrument. Sort of like a wailing sheep.
