Well, a tad bit, but not really so. Ethnicity is really defined as a group of people who identify themselves based on similarities which tend to include common ancestry, language, history, society and culture, while culture itself tend to be social behaviour and interactions which are considered acceptable in a certain society. So a tad bit equivalent but certainly not quite.

Are oranges and apples the same thing?

Oranges and apples are both fruit, but culture is a lot more fluid than ethnicity.

Yes and no. "Ethnicity" is not the same as "race" (races do not exist other than as a social construct) - it's a conglomeration of culture, heritage, norms, customs, religion etc. which results in a large degree of endogamy. It's impossible to define exactly what constitutes an ethnicity, since it's a matter of how humans interact with each other, not thoughts in people's heads. :p

I'm also not a fan of starring oneself blind on "ethnicty" either, countries like the US and Switzerland have their own "flavour" while made up of several ethnic communities, that are essential for those. I think identity has to be looked at as something compromised of several different factors, there is no law of nature makes the familial or local identity less important than the ethnic one, for instance. And one can certainly belong to a culture and a people without being related to those people by blood. Just look at adopted folks, etc. That doesn't mean that heritage isn't an important factor in people's lives - it is, and it will probably always be, since people are not born as blank sheets of paper.. :)

(that being said... not all ethnicities/communities in the world might commonly subconsciously accept those as "full" members of the tribe.. of course  )

Apples and oranges are pretty similar, actually, being members of the same clade Rosid. They separate into the orders Rosales and Sapindales, respectively.

to quote the Poet Philosopher Lawrence "Kris" Parker "Culture is Consciousness, Consciousness and Perception are the roots of Identity"

Ethnicity is a Statement of Identity, derived from Culture but filtered through the social contexts in which a person lives.

and remember Culture isnt just museum artifcats, music, art and language it is all the beliefs, traditions and practices of a group including their material, economic and sociopolitic structures. Thus Culture can not be seperated from the wider global context, from the perceptions of other people groups and the dominant institutional relationships of society which emerge as degrees of racism, gender inequality, social inclusion and tolerance

No, the difference is, well not only glaring but a rudimentary concept.

To carry on the discussion from another thread, since I remember making this one and I feel this is a more appropriate venue to continue it:

The Khmer never had a notion of race similar to the one that you're propounding. Most of the Khmer elite historically have been Sino-Cambodian but were never considered fake Cambodians because they followed Theravada Buddhism, spoke Khmer, and lived as Khmer. You don't have a basis to talk about a culture which you really know nothing about and by your own logic can't.

The problem lies in slapping Western conceptions of race and culture on others. While there's an overlap, it's not a 100% or probably even a majority overlap.
