Today the EU Parliament voted 348-278 for the controversial Article 13, which is to hold tech firms responsible for copyrighted material being posted without the permission of the copyright holder(s)

But, there is some good news, and that is memes and gifs will be exempt from this "for purposes of quotation, criticism, review, caricature, parody and pastiche."

The Article had the back of some high profile figures like Sir Paul McCartney, while other like Wyclef Jean have been against it, as well as an overwhelming majority of people online.

The purpose of the Article is "that search engines and news aggregate platforms should pay to use links from news websites." and "hold larger technology companies responsible for material posted without a copyright licence. Tech companies already remove music and videos which are copyrighted, but under the new laws they will be more liable for any copyrighted content."

So basically just corporate censorship by companies that cannot understand what fair use is and won't properly enter the 21st century.

So what say you NSG? Me, I still don't like it, even if it is a slight improvement, and I get what the purpose is about, but it feels very misguided and wrong. Also I don't think this will last considering that the EU elections are in two months so we'll see what happens then.

A) Ostracize each and every MEP who voted for Article 13 and help ensure that they do get kicked out, come next EU parliament elections.

B) Massive lobbying of national MPs to prevent upload filters and other bull to be included in the national laws that will be based onto the EU copryright law

C) Getting VPN might soon enough no longer be an option but a necessarity.

As an American Livertarian, I think that the free Market is all well and good. Unfortunately, I hate it when they get the government to support them with laws like Article 13.
