As I said, police often use discretion when dealing with things so I doubt they would prosecute someone for doing something like that.

It's very hard to explain to people in other parts of the world what it feels like to be in New Zealand right now, other than to say the entire country is in shock. Terrorism, and mass murder, on this scale has never happened before.

There is a real sense that the country has lost its innocence.

I am upset in a way that I have never experienced before.

I am sorry to hear that, and I wish you and your family to be safe and well through these hard times.

Maybe we shouldn't validate the attackers' motives? Maybe we shouldn't give him what he wants almost immediately? I dunno.

Then you shouldn't want to talk about the subject he just killed 49 people to make relevant, if you'd rather not be controlled by his whims.

Yes, the last mass shooting was in 1990, and the last terrorist attack was in 1985.

This is just incredible horror. Wilfully attacking a place of worship is among the lowest acts a human can perpetrate. Fuck the bastard.

RiderSyl, assume my recent knock it off to Torrocca and the Black Party applies to you as well.

Just take a moment to take a deep breath and pause before continuing this line of discussion. It's unhelpful given the emotive nature of the ongoing events.

Thank you.

It seems like NZ's lack of terror attacks and big murders seems to have played a part in why it was chosen as the place for the attack, at least that's what I was reading earlier.

According to his manifesto he chose NZ due to its relative remoteness:
"Secondly an attack in New Zealand would bring to attention the truth of the assault on our civilization, that no where in the world was safe, the invaders were in all of our lands, even in the remotest areas of the world..."

Hmm, that sounds like it's edited tbh. From what I remember the video went: breach -> runs down the hall shooting into the side and then main room -> retreat into hall to reload -> guy rushes, both fall over, mag presumably falls out here -> return to main room -> hallway again, find mag, pick it up.

Probably just 4chan trying to push the lel false flag idea as always.

Indeed it is, and the worst in New Zealand's history. Death toll's up to 49, and I don't think it's done climbing yet.

I strongly condemn this act of bestiality. Thoughts and solidarity with the people of New Zealand. The most shocking detail of this gunman, is that he was inspired by one of our bastards, Anders B Breivik. It now seems that far-right terrorists have gotten out of their 4chan nests and have begun acting. I now fear that more will come....

Thanks for your comment (and also to the many others above).

The truth is that a lot of the time I am guilty of doing that - we hear about them all the time in the news and I do shrug them off. I'll think "That's awful, but that's what you expect for living in [The US/UK/Europe/India/Etc.]"

And a conversation always ensues about how lucky we are to live in a small country on the bottom of the planet where these things don't happen. Where we are basically a bunch of Hobbits.

But to have this happen in your own backyard, in your own home town - as I'm sure any denizen of any major global city has already experienced now - is a different feeling.

New Zealand is a small country and Christchurch is not a huge city. There is every chance I will know some of the victims. I'll definitely know their families. Even if I don't know them well, I've probably seen them in shops, or walked into shops they own. I've passed them on the street. I've probably shared a glance or a joke or a smile.

These aren't just faces on the news now. And suddenly everywhere feels a lot less safe.
