What's more interesting is that literally last night we were talking about how these kinds of events (terrorist attack and/or mass shootings) should be reported on (i.e. no names, religions or ethnicities) and the point that came up repeatedly was the absence of these kinds of events here (meaning the country as a whole... although there is some concern that there is a wider network involved here even what happened in Christchurch is indicative of something very elaborate). The point was made that speculation spins off available facts/reporting and not the absence of these facts/reporting.

Also, and this is directed more at Costa because I doubt anyone else here would know (maybe you do), but did they ever rescind the armed police order in Christchurch following the other shootings?

You're not talking about the crapfest that is American government... you're talking about a political system which is a cult of personality away from a dictatorship (and, indeed, the current government has enacted -- controversial -- legislation to increase its power), where the closest thing to the "2nd Amendment" is a constitutional principle/the notion that parliament (who are effectively puppets of the government) can do literally anything. (In theory Theresa May's troubles with parliament should be able to happen here but there are a whole bunch of practical reasons which suggest they wouldn't.)

Oh... and it's a leftwing government propped up by a party that sits even further to the left and another party who will do and say literally anything in the name of (even temporary) vote winning, but to the extent it's not called populist is generally characterised as Muldoonist conservatism (i.e. big government conservatism).

That being said, I'm not sure what could be done moving forwards here other than feeling sad. NZ's had plenty of spying controversies and has vastly stricter gun legislation than the US and there's vastly less regionalism (literally, you vote for a council whose powers are dictated by parliament... and you vote for parliament... and there are no other state apparatus).

With that said, I hope this does not derail too much as well, but I feel like there is a question or two I can ask here on-topic: I know this is more or less an isolated case, and does not happen in NZ too much, but will this mean that a tighter gun control or licensing will take place? I know it's a common trope to suggest restricting guns after a shootout like this, but it's obvious that the man is suffering from ultra-violent tendencies.

I am aware of the responsible gun owners around the world, especially in NZ, but surely we must do something to restrict someone like him to get the guns? Will a background check work?
