Short hand: Several well to do high society people paid a ringleader 25 million dollars to fudge college entrance exams as well as falsify data stating their children were college athletes when they had no intentions of playing on the school teams. Some of the schools involved include Yale, UCLA, and University of Texas and several others. at least 2 colleges head tennis coaches were suspended due to this.

I find this funny and irritating that they'll allow to colleges to continue to raise tuition and give others IST (In state tuition) when there from another country entirely but they'll look the other way when massive fraud and bribery scandal happens with prestigious schools. I think all credits to those who got into school by this scheme should be nullified and have them be forced to pay for college on there own w/o state or federal financial aid.

I was wondering when this would turn up here. You also have a typo in the last sentence of the first paragraph.

There needs to be some fairly extensive corruption to make this scheme workable. Heads need to roll as a result.

Weird, if you are going to spend 6.5 million to get your kid it, just do it the old fashioned way, donate to the football team.

According to the articles, there was blatant corruption and sophisticated methods of covering it up. Heads are already rolling and will probably continue to roll.

What I think is really too bad is the universities in question have very high entrance standards, and the fact students were admitted based on how much an athletic department employee was bribed on behalf of a wealthy family comes off as "egg on the face" of said standards.

What's the point of doing that though? Colleges/Universitys are easy to get into. (Well here it is, but I'm not sure about American Universitys.)

On the whole easy to get into, much less easy to pay for.

Despite the recent political talk on the matter, community college tends to be extremely easy to pay for but the issue comes in at the four year level or better. Chief cause? Private colleges eating so much of the overall resources. This not only reduces available funding for existing students, but encourages universities to jack up prices and attempt to better entice wealthier kids at the expense of those who aren't.

So basically the crime here was the parents and the ringleader consipring to disguise the bribe payments as tax-deductible contributions, amirite? Had they not done that all this would be above board, at least as far as the US Attorneys of the world would be concerned.

Anybody out there still concerned about affirmative action? Anyone? Bueller?

Some of them are nearly impossible. Yale, which is mentioned by name, requires you be not white, have a gpa of 4.12, have a parent who attended, be a star athlete, plenty of community service, or a lot of bribery. University of Iowa requires you graduate highschool, pay tuition, and enter that God forsaken state. The US is a massive decentralized country :)

I was wondering if this would be here.

All I can say is wow. White privilege much?

I read there was one cases where one tried to write of the "donation" on their taxes.

The only ones I have sympathy for are the kids who didn't know this was going on. One kid was startled to hear he was on a soccer scholarship another kid had a basketball scholarship and he is 5' 5.

There needs to be punishment and it has to hurt as these people are wealthy. The kids who were apart; need to be tossed. For those who are unaware? Probably can remain? I don't know.

For each kid on this "program" another who worked hard; was rejected.....

Indeed. I had an old high school girlfriend who was a genius. The couldn't measure her. What she saw in me; I never understood. :D She went to Stanford and I lost track of her.

Years later; we ran into each other and had lunch. Asked about Stanford and she said she dropped out. I was surprised and asked why. I remember her response to this day.

"You would be amazed how many stupid kids with very large bank accounts go there"

She went on to start her own movie editing and sound studio. Worked on many well known films.

College sports rakes in a lot of free publicity and thus students as well endowment donations. To go a step further and if we're blunt, it's also a way of increasing diversity within the student body, given who mainly gets recruited to play on College (And, often as a result, National) teams.

College sports (Especially American Football, Basketball, and Baseball) are a multimillion, probably even billion, dollar industry and massive income source for colleges in the US.

Hell, most major league sports as well as the Olympics teams in the US pick and choose players from college teams.
