Kidnapping people as a private venture was almost always looked on as piracy. Legal slavery necessarily meant prisoners of war. This was not considered particularly abhorrent because when you go to war it means you might be killed, taking a guy trying to kill you as a slave was reasonably seen as fair play.

The defender and the supporter of Slavery are as bad as the slave trader and the slaver themselves. In some cases, even worse -because most of them wouldn't be able to own slaves and yet defend the most abhorrent concept in human history.
