To enact violence upon fellow humans and establish order, not most people care though as long the state it regulates itself.

To reflect the Rule of God upon the Earth; that is to say, to make Order out of Chaos, just as God ordered the Universe into Being ex nihilo. It is from this philosophical basis that the State in general, and the Monarch in particular, gains his/her legitimacy.

I strongly agree that it is the state's duty to make Order out of Chaos, but for reasons of philosophy as opposed to theology; I believe I've already stated my semi-Hobbesian reasoning before in my various hot takes within NSG. Must I state it again?

I think something narrow and specific would be better than something like Nea Byzantia's suggestion, which we've had before and is unlikely to be particularly representative. Could I suggest a poll asking people's opinions on how the state should interact with religion? Theocracy (i.e. control of secular government by religious authorities), caesaropapism (i.e. subordination of religious to secular authorities), secularism, laïcité and state atheism could be included as options.

Speaking of life being nasty, brutish, and short... let's resort to a good old fashioned question: what is the proper role of the state, if anything?

To me, the State is the protector and the arbiter. It protects its subject (The Citizen) from outside threats, and it arbitates in their disputes.

I'll just re-post this from the end of the last thread:

Socially, I'm rather fond of the high degree of social and behavioral control which Singapore exerts over its citizens, and despite its many flaws, I've nevertheless great respect for the People's Action Party. Politically, I support a bicameral legislature organized along a combination of sortition (lower house) and corporatism (upper house), with elements of a semi-direct democracy; the executive branch would be organized along the lines of the scholar-officials of imperial China and mixed with the ideal of "philosopher kings", albeit updated for the modern era. Economically, a mixed economy is best, perhaps something similar to an ordoliberal social market economy, or perhaps a system similar to dirigisme? The jury's still out on that one. Speaking of juries, and thus criminal justice, I support a re-structuring of the mess that is the American criminal justice system/prison system. In other news, some of my more radical positions include the strengthening of ties between the USA, Canada, and Mexico, to form a "North American Union" of sorts. Another more radical position of mine is the implementation of a UBI to offset job loss due to automation. Lastly, in regards to culture, I support "tradition" (a nebulous and oft vague concept, I know) out of pragmatism, but recognize that "tradition" must be in accord with the Good in order to be of use, or at the very least serve to prevent the summum malum (war of all against all).
