The concept sounds great right? A 1000 tonne tank with twin 280mm guns, impervious to any damage and protected by host of AA guns that can destroy anything in its way. Let's ignore that it couldn't cross bridges, would crush roads, is slower than a snail, requires extraordinary amounts of materials, fuel, manpower and ammo and most importantly a big fat target for Allied aircraft.

What are your favorites, denizens of NSG?

My favourite war weapon, and I use weapon very loosely here, is a Dutch defense mechanism.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Wat ... _Waterline

It's literally drowning a piece of land, in case of invasion.

Scorched Earth tactic, the water variant.
The Blaatschapen should resign

The Russians need to be a little less paranoid. I doubt any information regarding a 75+ year old tank can be of any danger to release.

I wish they would stop trying to hide stuff about history.

But it is a funny thing. Would definitely be interesting to learn more about it.

That's very true. Chrissake, why haven't we started manufacturing them yet?

Far too expensive.

Being a WW1 kinda guy, the Tankgewehr M1918 is one of my favourite weird guns. It was almost 40 pounds and was taller than most men at the time!

The T-Gewehr wasn't that weird. The Germans were planning to make an anti-air/anti-armour machine gun when some clever fellow pointed out "We're going to need to make a really simple rifle to test this new ammunition, why don't we make a bunch of them and get them in the trenches now?"

And that man was Adolf Hitler.

Haha, no, not really.

Hitler actually used one to escape Berlin. It was invulnerable. Hitler rolled up to Stalin's private plane in Moscow and flew it to Argentina. The Russian shame was too much and they hid it from the world.

The superior German rounded armor allowed it to absorb even the mighty shells of the KV-2 and SU-series SPGs and thus Hitler never actually died.

There isnt anything silly or outlandish in its design, but the fact that it was the primary torpedo for the USN in the beginning of WWII, and it had a success rate on average of about 30%, is just ridiculous.

Eh that was about average for all mass produced torpedos involved in the war. They were all nearly useless and throughout the war upgraded until in 44/45 they had between a 50% and 70% success rate. It was common practice for sub commanders on all sides to launch a minimum of two per target. According to various memoirs I have read the notorious clank of scoring a hit but no detination drove them to be furious.

I wouldn’t call it dumb or stupid as they did their job quite splendidly well. The main focus/objective in the Aztec flowers wars was not complete destruction of another native society but its utter subjugation in order to supply themselves with either a steady steam of slaves or sacrifices. Both of which need to be alive to supply the Aztec state.

Probably the 210mm Iraqi Al-Fao howitzer, arguably the most effective and formidable self-propelled gun ever built.

It was very, very sophisticated for its time. If Jane's is to believed, this thing was more advanced than any piece of field artillery the US or Soviet Union had in service. Naturally the Iraqis couldn't have come up with this themselves, they hired one of the world's premier artillery scientists and a crew of foreign technicians to carry out all the design work. The technology for the gun was also stolen from several countries.

The Al-Fao never went into production, probably because of its astronomical projected production costs.

There was only one prototype, but after being exhibited at a few arms shows it was never seen again. A smaller version of the same SPG called the Al-Majnoon (a prototype which went on display with the Al-Fao and was likewise never seen again) was found in an underground bunker in Iraq after the 2003 invasion, where it had been parked and then forgotten. The US forces which discovered it didn't say what they had in mind, but I'm guessing it was scrapped.

The Al-Fao remains missing, and what happened to the single prototype is a mystery for the ages.
