As much as I would love to have a socialist given the boot, this seems mostly her chief of staff’s fault, to which I doubt AOC herself would be in much legal trouble (the political trouble is a whole other issue, which is real complicated)

Oh, are we trying to claim that a few gaffes while speaking as a novice congresswoman make her stupid? Because if so, the entire assembly might as well be included.

Really?

His credit in this is not a compliment.

He is such an offensive fuck wit; women are motivated to get into politics.

It seems to be a blanket response to any political figure we vaguely dislike at the moment. I don't genuinely believe her gender is the issue, though women on both sides of the political aisle tend to bear the brunt of gendered attacks. Calling her strong or intelligent is something of a stretch as well. All politicians are more intelligent than average as rule, even Trump in all likelihood. That doesn't mean the positions they articulate will always be well-considered. I'd be content to call her charismatic at best and a media darling at worst.

Basing understanding of how costs of living vary, sometimes dramatically, across the nation and that trying to adopt a one size fits all policy in response to something that isn't even a problem in some areas is next level stupid.

And why do you find it to be a problem, if it'll raise the overall standard amount of income for everyone?

I’ll preempt him. “Because not everyone can afford to pay their workers a living wage, because cost of living is different in Nowhere, Nebraska than Chicago, and value of labor”

Twofold: one is because there's been a few studies done at this point on $15 minimum wage at more locals levels that it really actually doesn't raise anyones income after you factor in business price hikes and working hours cuts and two because it disproportionately harms small businesses who can't keep up with megacorporations and are forced to downsize and or lay people off because they can't give out more money without more income to justify it.

An ideal solution would be a repeal of federal minimum wage and a new law or amendment that dictates that states/local areas need to have a minimum wage pegged to some sorta cost of living index so that everyone in every area makes what they need at the bare minimum.

... So then, if you want the working class to have money, illegalize a business owner's ability to arbitrarily cut working hours in response to a raise in minimum wage?

Then A) introduce new taxes to the corporations to reduce the power imbalance and B) if the boss of a small business isn't willing to ensure a living wage for the workers, say by cutting back their own wages a bit, then they can get fucked anyways, because fuck Capitalism.

It would be a big disappointment if Ocasio-Cortez was directly involved in this little scandal but I'm not going to jump to conclusions right now because it'd be premature to do so. My hope in her would definitely waver if she couldn't manage to respond to these allegations or prove them wrong.

Still, I do genuinely wonder why some dislike her so passionately. I mean, we've all been complaining about how rigged and deeply corrupt the system is and how rich corporations have been exploiting society for years through actions such as lobbying but when someone like Bernie or AOC come along and try to change things up a bit, it's like as if people think they're the re-incarnation of Stalin. I'm not saying these two are messiahs of the people but they are definitely proponents for change.

I can understand that her inexperience is a clear issue but otherwise, what's wrong with her or her platform?

The argument of 'not all businesses could afford to pay a living wage' is I think a fair argument, wouldn't it be nice if unions were empowered to negotiate so that a national minimum wage wasn't necessary?
Too bad about all that union busting.
