Idaho Republicans block ban on child marriage

Postby Vassenor » Sat Mar 02, 2019 4:04 am

I'm running out of snark for this sort of crap.

Idaho’s statehouse Republicans killed a bill that would have created a minimum marriage age in the state, essentially cementing the state’s continued reign as America’s number-one hot spot for newlyweds too young to vote and/or drive. The Idaho Statesman reports that HR 98, which would have eliminated marriage licenses for those 15 and under, and have strengthened the consent requirements for those 16 and 17, failed by a vote of 28-39, with 3 abstaining.

Like... what is even the logic here at all? What makes it so vitally important to be able to marry someone who cannot legally consent to it?

The Idaho Republicans are clearly very proud of their state's reputation as the USA's capital for child marriages.

While I'm against it, I think it's more of an idaho thing rather than a Republican thing specifically.

Given that society currently considers children far younger than fifteen able to consent to hormone treatments and sex-change surgery, why not marriage?

Of the two, it's the far less life-altering.

It's funny, back in the day getting married at 13-15 was the norm.

Thing is, it's not back in the day anymore, and this ban is quite reasonable.

Not just Idaho

Its been pointed out by international Human Rights groups that the US has worse child marriage laws than Afghanistan (Minimum Age 16) whereas in the US 17 states have no minimum age of marriage, 2 states have a minimum age of 14 and 5 states have a minimum age of 15.

Like many of the unsavory aspects of US conservative culture, tolerance of child marriage seems to be well ingrained in America. Its not a new phenomena and its well known that many evangelical churchs actively advocate for young girls marrying much older men.

But for state politicians to actually defend the practice and outright block efforts to end it is still incomprehensible, just another addition to the Litany of WTF Murica?!!!!!

Are you actually claiming that no youth under fifteen are encouraged into hormone therapy/SRS? That's not a difficult claim to disprove.

Anyone else vomitted in their mouth seeing the picture in the OP's linked article of that terrified and frightened little girl and the sleazy old man who is her husband wrapping a possessive hand around her shoulder? My god, how do people who do this sleep at night
Purgatio is an absolutist hereditary monarchy run as a one-party fascist dictatorship, which seized power in a sudden and abrupt coup d'état of 1987-1988, on an authoritarian eugenic and socially Darwinistic political philosophy and ideology, now ruled and dominated with a brutal iron fist under the watchful reign of Le Grand Roi Chalon-Arlay de la Fayette and La Grande Reine Geneviève de la Fayette (née Aumont) (i.e., the 'Founding Couple' or Le Couple Fondateur).

Well not the exact same thing since idaho has different laws, but various states still allow marriages or relationships at younger ages than 18, and this is true across the U.S. Also being married doesn't always mean of the age of consent for sex, but it depends on the place. There are also democrat held areas with lower than 18 marriages, such as Connecticut (16), New Hampshire (16), Hawaii (15), and Maryland (15), as well as territories that are democrat leaning such as Puerto rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands and the district of colombia.

Notice how your article doesn't say anything about children being pushed towards getting SRS pre-AOC.

Also do you have anything that isn't six years old?

Marriage doesn't mean consent to sex, so you can be married and still not able to consent to sex. Also afghanistan is not really that bad of a place, Iran or Pakistan are really worse places. Something like 24% of the marraiges are under 18 in Pakistan, and ages of 13-15 are possible for girls legally, with it being socially acceptable at much younger ages. Unfortunately, this is also generally the age of consent in these countries.

They were actors, the scene was created in New York as a social experiment to highlight child marriage as an issue in the US. Before 2017 New York state allowed marriage at 14, but minimum age has since been raised to 17.

SO he was suppose to look creepy and the girl innocent, it seems they still illicit the desired effect ...

The law also required 16 and 17 year olds to seek consent from parents in order to marry.

That isn't "Strengthening consent protections.". It's removing their ability to consent. In situations where 16/17 year olds are being coerced into marriage, demanding the consent of the most likely people to be coercing them isn't a "Protection.". That clause does nothing but restrict the rights of young adults for no discernible reason beyond moral panic.

I'd even go so far as to say it's a deliberate wrecking proposal designed to give the Democrats the chance to cry foul and call the Republicans a bunch of pedophiles for opposing the law.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

In Tennessee, the age was actually increased. Tennessee passed another bill which overturned the loophole though, but in a different way, making the minimum age 17, if the person marrying the 17 year old is only 4 years older or less, or 21.

PDF: "(a) lt is unlawful for any county clerk or deputy clerk in this state to issue a marriage license to any person where: (1) Either of the contracting parties is under seventeen (17) years of age; or (2) One (1) of the contracting parties is at least seventeen (17) years of age but less than eighteen (18) years of age and the other contracting party is at least four (4) years older than the minor contracting party"

The first paragraph of the article.

CHICAGO - A small but growing number of teens and even younger children who think they were born the wrong sex are getting support from parents and from doctors who give them sex-changing treatments, according to reports in the medical journal Pediatrics.

Here's a four-year-old getting SRS.
