If the UK stays in the EU at the end of this kerfuffle, I don't expect their status to be as secure. Not even to mention that it would render the past few years a hilarious waste of time.

If we end up staying without any change of status, it'll be the most Yes, Minister thing ever. More so than any actual episode of Yes, Minister.

Now it's true that I always did like the kind of absurd humor the British are so good at, but that's no way to run a country.

I missed this in the chaos...

Caroline Spelman actually tried to withdraw the Spelman amendment requiring the government to rule out a no-deal Brexit before it was voted on; but it passed anyway.

The Guardian sums it up succinctly:

Didn’t Spelman want to pull her amendment?
Yes, she did, because of party pressure. But the Speaker ruled she alone could not do this, and if other MPs who had signed the amendment wanted it voted on this should happen. The Labour MP and signatory Yvette Cooper moved it. Spelman thus won a vote she wanted to lose, making her the anti-May.

Well, yeah. But if the options are 'shoot myself in the head right now' or 'shoot myself in the head in half an hour' ... I would choose the latter. Who knows what might happen in 30 minutes?

I assumed that she would have been pleased that her amendment passed. Hmm. This whole sorry state of affairs just keeps on throwing up lots more strange little nonsenses; it's a veritable goldmine of them.

Without the Fixed terms act this would have been resolved by now, May would be gone and replaced with some other Tory.

Replacing May would solve absolutely nothing.

Rumour has it that the ERG will agree to support the third meaningful vote so long as May agrees to go.

Rumour also has it that if the government loses MV3 by a narrow margin, it will immediately call MV4.

So it seems that while it's undemocratic to call a second referendum in the space of three years, just in case people change their minds, it's perfectly democratic to keep calling a parliamentary vote on the same legislation over and over again in a period of a few weeks in the vague hope that it might eventually pass.

No doubt someone will now attempt to parse that logic.

But the EU said that this past meaningful vote was the last chance. The UK screwed the pooch

Just a thought. Assuming May manages to get her deal through the commons, won't the lords have to debate and vote on it as well?
