However, both parties have a strong claim to continuity with earlier movements, the Democrats originating from a split in the Jeffersonian Democratic-Republican Party that came into existence from c.1792, and the Conservative Party able to claim continuity from the second Tory party that coalesced around Pitt the Younger from c.1783 (acknowledging that Pitt's supporters initially rejected the 'Tory' label).

Well yeah, insofar as they are trying to cast a large net of nonpartisan politics, and there isn't really anything bad with that per se, but it means they struggle with an actual identity, and as far as I can tell they don't really do a good job of listening to 52% of that net and understanding why they voted the way they did.
