Mario and Luigi are self employed businessmen, close friends of royalty, own racing cars and tracks, and Luigi has a mansion, of course they're Tory voters.

Do you think the process for doubtful ballots is fair?

basically there was one council where a Tory and Independent were tied in number of votes. After this, the prescribed process is to count "Doubtful" papers, votes which don't strictly follow the rules but do indicate a choice of party, following this the Tories were ahead by one vote due to a ballot with the word BREXIT written on it and an arrow pointing to the Conservative candidate.

The seperation of spoiled ballots into "No vote/Illegible" and "Doubtful, counted only in event of Tie" is the thing being disputed here. The independent intends to dispute both the meaning of the ballot and the overall practice, while the Conservative and the returning officer note that this is current practice, though the returning officer did say the independent has an absolute right to dispute the meaning of the ballot under the rules and a court can judge it.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

A combination of sheer luck, stubbornness and localised parties in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The FPTP system disadvantages third parties, but from what I understand the US has additional electoral laws which were designed to retain two-party oligarchy and disadvantage third parties further, and I suppose the UK does not have anything similar.

The fact that the counting of "doubtful" ballots is a thing that exists solely to save FPTP from its own inherent silliness... 'tis something.

These results are fun.

Wonder how BXP would do if they stood. We'll see at Euroelections. So far, they're 1st in polls with 11 point lead.

With 242 of 248 councils reporting, I think it's safe to go over the winners and losers:

Winners:
- The Liberal Democrats - The Clegg years thoroughly behind them, the Lib Dems have come back with a vengeance and taken huge chunks out of the Tories.
- Independents and Residents Associations - The other big winners are a mixture of many policies and ideas, but the main one is an overall dislike of the major political parties and a desire for local government for local people.
- The Greens - We're finally overtaking UKIP and becoming the fourth largest party, with large numbers of new seats taken on new councils. Hopefully this raises our profile a bit.

Losers:
- Conservatives - Losing a whole fifth of all their councillors, the Tories look very weak and wobbly, as the subject of Europe once again pulls the social and fiscal conservative factions apart.
- Labour - While they've not posted the same huge losses as the Tories, being an opposition party who fails to gain in local elections does not paint a picture of a party ready to defeat the Tories.
- UKIP - Their hopes of being a permanent fourth party long gone, UKIP have been all but wiped out. We'll have to wait for the European Elections to see if the Brexit party can take their place.

After seeing the two main pro-Brexit parties getting slaughtered and the major pro-Remain party surging? Your logic is questionable.

By that logic Brexit still won this election, by a larger margin than the referendum.

5500 - Brexit parties
2600 - Remain, assuming all independents are remainers.

Brexit parties lost about 1000 seats, but that doesn't much matter. Still over 2/3rds of seats.

Independents are surging, most pro-Brexit. In Malton, spoilt ballots came in 1st place. Most of the seats that UKIP lost, they didn't even re-run a candidate.

There was no pro-Brexit party standing in any ward today across England except for the few where UKIP decided to field candidates. I had a choice of Tory (Remain), Labour (Remain), Lib Dem (hard Remain), Green (hard Remain) today. No reason to go out and vote. Hence why probably this area only had a 22% turnout.

Reading this as a pro-Remain win is funny. But hey, we'll wait to see if the polls showing Brexit Party in 1st place with 11 point lead and total pro-Brexit vote at 47% (minus hesitant labour leavers) is true.

So far Labour lost in Sunderland and Bolsover to pro-Brexit proxies. So hey.
