The watches thread

Postby Chessmistress » Tue Feb 26, 2019 12:07 pm

This thread is meant as a discussion about wristwatches (including smartwatches even if personally I'm not into smartwatches)
Do you use a wristwatch, NSGs, or do you consider it a thing of the past? There are a lot of people who don't find it useful, they use the mobile phone to check the hour.

I use a wristwatch on a daily basis, I actually own 5:
The “expensive” watches are two: they’re actually expensive without quotation marks but they didn’t cost me, since I got both as gifts from my grandparents – one is a Longines, gold-plated, very traditional quartz watch, with gold hands and a black leather strap, about mid-Eighties, the other one is a Squale diver watch 50 atmos (meaning 500 meters deep waterproof), even older: late Seventies / early Eighties. I rarely use those two, they're precious and must be preserved, so I use them just only in some special events.
My "medium" watch is a Thermidor, Swiss made, gold-plated with a black leather strap, its design is very similar to the Longines above but the case is more egg-shaped (the Longines' case is more round), I got it as a gift too, but it's probably worth just only about 50 $ (its price as new should had been something like 100-200 $) and that is three-four or even five times less than the Longines (I'm not sure about the quotation, however, and I don't care so much since I'm not going to sell it).
My cheap watches are somewhat more interesting and use I them in every day life: the more recent is “IE-LY” brand, made in China, the background is white with arabic black numbers, the hands are wonderful old style and very elegant, the case is plated in rose gold as the hands are, the strap is in red leather, this is worth just only about 10-20 $ and it's not even waterproof however it’s my preferred one for everyday use - actually I bought this one because it looks much more expensive than how actually is ;)
I also have another wristwatch made in China: pale pink background, oblique arabic numbers in the higher half but a little mess in the lower half (it’s supposed to simulate a complication with planets but it’s a fake), the case is plated in rose gold, the strap is black leather – no waterproof, worth 10-20 $ as the other, I suppose.
They all have in common: no chronographs, no complications (apart from the fake thing on the last, but it's purely decorative) - just hands and numbers (4 out of 5 don't even have the date, just only the Squale have it).

So, NSGs, do you own a wristwatch, do you own more than one?
If you like to wear a wristwatch (or smartwatch), what kind do you own/use?
And, if you don't like them, or you even hate them, why?

I do actual work, which means a watch is not going to survive long on my wrist.

Wristwatches are expensive decorations whose sole purpose is entirely negated by phones.

Also highly uncomfortable for people who don’t have the wrists for such things.

Then I dare say you're missing the intrinsic beauty of what a wristwatch can be - they are pieces of jewellery, statement pieces, which have their own personality and character. Yes they can tell time and depending on the watch, date, month, hell, phase of the moon (depends on the number of complications it has), but they are an accessory just like any other piece of jewellery (be it for a man or woman). Edit 1: And they don't even have to be expensive.

I personally have about 7 or 8 wristwatches and two pocketwatches, one of which may have belonged to my Great Grandfather (which still works amazingly well) and one which I overpayed way too much for (thank you eBay). I had a few more wristwatches but I sold them on said eBay, one of which ended up being broken, so I gave it to the guy for free. Sigh.

Edit 2: and I never, EVER, want to own a smart watch. "I like my watches looking smart." (C)2019

Yes, I have multiple different kinds. At the moment in terms of mechanical watches I have a Komandirskie, a Ruhla, and a Sekonda, but I quite regularly buy new ones. I also own a French pocket watch from the 1910s. I have a throwaway Casio digital watch too.

I wear my Komandirskie every day.

I wear wristwatches, I have one for everyday wear and I have an expensive one that is worn on special occasions. 90% of the time I don't take my phone with me when I'm out and I prefer my wristwatch anyway.

Why not take your phone out with you? Isn't that kinda the point of having a smartphone/cellphone, so you can be reached while you're out? I mean nobody has a land line now hardly anyway but it just seems different!

I have a nice watch too that seldom sees the light of day (the odd job interview perhaps only) but otherwise it stays tucked away safely.

It's just one more thing I have to carry and or worry about. And when I'm out I'm already with my buds or family, I don't really want to be bothered. I only take my phone with me when I'm at work.

Very interesting, a person once I know had an Amphibia, I checked "Komandirskie" and it seems it's from from the very same Russian maker.

A Casio digital I got for my 7th birthday survived and worked for almost ten years - such period include even while, aged 8-9, I did put it within a working oven...

Yes, the Komandirskie is the less well-known cousin of the Amphibia. Most of them actually have exactly the same movement in them, the self-winding Vostok 2416B (note that the website lists it as "Wosktok", but trust me, it's "Vostok"). I prefer the Komandirskie to the Amphibia, as the cases tend to be a bit thicker and sturdier than the Amphibia. The quality of them has actually improved dramatically in the past ten years, as the cases are now made from one piece cast steel, rather than the chromed brass nonsense they used to have, which had a tendency to wear off and show the brass underneath after a few years.

I have had to change the strap on mine for a NATO strap, and changed the battery once, but apart from that it has worked flawlessly for decades. I have heard that some people have problems with the buttons on them, they stop responding after a few years, but I've never had that problem.

I do own various watches, both pocket watches and wristwatches.
Nowadays I wear an automatic Swatch, fully mechanic. It's fairly accurate.

Eventually, I'd like to get a wristwatch with a 24-hour quadrant. (Analogic, of course).

Exactly because I don't want to be reached sometimes. Also, I do not take my phone out while at work, it would be incredibly unprofessional.
Also, wtf you mean "nobody has a landline"? Everyone has a landline at home, it comes with any fiber connection and any DSL.
