It's funny, I was having this discussion with some mates at work a couple days ago.

It's all well and good being trained in self defense, but a lot of self defense training in done in controlled environments. The real world is a lot messier, nothing like the movies. It should absolutely be a last resort. Even if it will work 9 times out of 10, that 1 is gonna get you seriously fucked up.

Nope, fightin' them is too risky. After all, there are three of them, and there is a great risk one or two can outflank me. Besides, those knives look pretty sharp.

Yet I can't afford to "Peacefully comply and hand over the money". I am not a millionaire, and 3000 american dollars are big money... especially for a place I come from.

So, I use another military trick. A tactical retreat. What is this? I run, but with courage. No need to risk fighting them... just outmaneuver once and quickly run. Unless I am cornered in an elevator... After all, governemnt gave me nice fitness training, so why not use it? Besides, their reflexes are not too fast.

Also, before running, I may pretend, that I comply, just to make them relax and lose vigilence.

PS: If those muggers are actually a gang of professional knife throwers, who escaped from the circus... God, Allah, Buddha, Odin, or whoever runs the universe, help me.

Seriously? I've been outnumbered worse than that, and so far striking down one (immediately, no talking, just aiming to hurt one of them the most and most quickly) has been more than enough to make the others run.
There's absolutely no guarantee that such amateurs (three with knives, all three of them closing in?) will want to leave their victim alive and able to identify them. So it's better to scare the hell out of them.

This is... not true, to say the least. My wallet contains my healthcare card, school ID, library card, learner's permit (I suck at driving), my debit card (Bank account balance best described as more dollars than sense, so to speak; yay privilege), my housekeys, and a bunch of old receipts. The most valuable thing is... probably the wallet itself, since it's a rather kewl wallet.

I'm from a previous generation, I don't even know what a "Yu Gi Oh" is; I assume it is some kind of pokemans.

You can't duel people with just 1 card, you need at least a deck of 40 cards (nowadays its more than 40 because of the introduction of Synchro weapons necessitating large Side Decks)

My guess is that this is part of the government's experiment. Train people in self defence, stage a mugging, see if the training has made them think they're an action movie badass.

I should've been taught to be able to evaluate the present condition thoroughly, so I don't know because I've never been trained on a secret island before. That being said, a particular quote from a US soldier/trainer always stuck: "The best defense is usually to run", so #2 it is. I can afford losing $3000 due to my recent paycheck.
