That said, it'd be highly unrealistic for me to be carrying that much cash. Usually I don't have cash at all. If I had my usual $0 + array of plastic, I'd hand over the wallet. Plastic can all be canceled. None of those game cards would be in there, and especially not something ultra-rare. Anything "ultra rare" sounds like it's worth decent money, in which case, it'd be at home - carefully packed up and waiting for someone to buy it from the eBay listing I'd have up for it.

By the way if you're carrying around $3000 in cash, you don't just have muggers to worry about, there is also a gang called the police who have a robbery tactic called civil asset forfeiture, and if you defend yourself you'll be locked up.

They probably wouldn't give me any problems even in an area where that's common, because they wouldn't know I had the $3000. Muggers are more opportunistic.

They're just common thugs; I doubt they could hold their own against somebody with martial arts training - especially when said martial arts is the official martial art of the Israeli Defense Forces. Been training in weapons combat for awhile, and here's a simple fact: if someone comes at you with a knife and you are unarmed, you are going to get cut, even if you block. If someone is threatening you with a knife and you have a way of defusing without them coming at you, you take it. If you are in a 3 v 1 situation, all of them with knives, you are going to get got. It would require both a ton of training and about a million times more luck to walk away without some very severe injuries.

None of that is worth the contents of your wallet. The only times you fight is if you have no other options, or if the life of someone else is immediately on the line if you do not.

My grandfather used to carry 7k-9k around whenever there was a snowstorm (he delivered oil for furnaces and was paid in cash).
He only got mugged three times, and was never armed beyond his tanker truck (including the very high pressure hose). He gave the money and just asked if he could keep his ID and wallet. Seems good enough a solution for me, especially considering how in this scenario I KNOW that the muggers are armed and not just possibly armed.

I doubt six months of martial arts practice is anywhere near enough for that.

Seriously? I've been outnumbered worse than that, and so far striking down one (immediately, no talking, just aiming to hurt one of them the most and most quickly) has been more than enough to make the others run.
There's absolutely no guarantee that such amateurs (three with knives, all three of them closing in?) will want to leave their victim alive and able to identify them. So it's better to scare the hell out of them.

They already have their weapons out. Leaving them with the idea that you're at their mercy makes you a good candidate for being on receiving end of a stabbing.

If they still come at you, then you're going to have to fight regardless, so the question is moot.

I'll be honest, I mostly just skip all of the preamble and get right to the available options with IM's threads.

That said, I think there's a clear distinction between intent to steal and intent to harm in this situation. If you can get away with not having to fight, why wouldn't you? Follow the path of least risk.

That handing over your wallet is even an option suggests that doing so is a valid path that won't necessarily lead to having to choose the first option anyway.
Then again, as I write that I recall all the other times that IM has narrowed the hypothetical to allow only one valid answer.

In real life if your in a 3 v 1 situation and your not armed and they are unless you one the greatest fighters in the world your not going to win.
