The End of the Opportunity Rover

On February 13th 2019, NASA has announced that the Martian Opportunity Rover mission is concluded after being unable to wake the rover from hibernation. The project was launched in 2003 and the rover landed in 2004, with a planned mission duration of only 90 Martian days. However the rover has survived and the mission lasted 5352 Martian days.
I personally think that the Opportunity rover was a great achievement of human interplanetary exploration. With NASA having the Curiosity and the planned Mars 2020 rover by 2021, I believe that these rovers that could find the former source of water on Mars couldn't have been possible without the Opportunity rover's feats.

The US space agency (Nasa) has called time on its Opportunity Mars rover.

The six-wheeled robot last contacted Earth in June last year, just before it was enveloped in the darkness of a global dust storm.

Engineers hoped Oppy would power back up when the skies cleared and sunlight hit its solar panels again - but there has not been a peep out of the rover.

The routine prompt commands that have been sent to Opportunity will now end. The mission has been declared over.

"We tried valiantly over these last eight months to recover the rover, to get some signal from it," explained project manager John Callas.

"We've listened every single day with sensitive receivers, and we sent over 1,000 recovery commands. We heard nothing and the time has come to say goodbye."

Opportunity has finally been declared as lost and I'm genuinely upset that it's dead. Curiosity is still going so there is still science happening on Mars but Oppy managed to last for 14.5 years, 14 years and 3 months longer than it was designed for. It was a plucky little rover.
