Out of curiosity, what brought y'all to nationstates? A friend? Found it yourself? Adverts?

For me, I was running this roleplaying game for my friends called Over The Edge, which is set in a nation called Al Amarja. I was prepping some material, and googled Al Amarja to see if there was any fan work on the setting.

Turned up the Al Amarja in nationstates. Thought "huh, what is this thing?" and made a nation myself, which I named after the setting nation in another rpg I was running at the time, this time a homebrew one. Candlewhisper Archive was a monastery library with a vampiric chief librarian, staffed by a literal skeleton crew. Never intended to do much with it, but joined 10,000 Islands on the basis that in my game it was all about thousands of islands in an unending ocean, with the players sailing between them.

That was only 4 years ago. I may have become a little bit engaged in the game since then.

Friend of mine told me about it. He said NS struck him as the sort of thing I might like.

I've answered this question before in the past, in another thread but I'll answer it here as well.

A few years ago, back around about 2016, some friends and I were playing some game on Xbox, probably Battlefield 3 or 4, or one of the CODs that came out around that time, just messing around in a party and one of them brought up nationstates, so then began a lengthy discussion during a TDM match or a Conquest or Rush match on either a COD game or one of the two mentioned Battlefield games about NS and how I should join them. So I decided to make an East Germany because I was a hard core commie before I picked up a book on economics and realised that communism doesn't work, stuck with that for a bit trying to make it a military superpower(It mildly worked but black market happened), then I made a Japan which is still around and hasn't CTE'd, then one thing led to another with multiple rps and here I am with an FT version of that Japan. And not a communist. Honestly it's been a rollercoaster between then and now both on site and irl with some sprinkles of attempted murder aimed towards me and multiple months of no sleep because of worry about drugaddicts cutting the brakes on my lorry(Which is where the attempted murder bit comes in because they managed to melt my brakes somehow.)

And now I'm here. It's been interesting.

OH wow, that's awesome. I've, uh, been doing this game for a REALLY long time. Like, since, 2002? Or 2003? Something like that? And this is the nicest thing I've ever heard. Thank you so much for letting me know.

I was a big fan of Robin Laws so when I was forced to make an emergency name change (now THERE'S a story...) I went for that, but didn't quite pick up the mannerisms of Her Exaltedness or anything, just kept going with the oddball riff I was already going with.

Good lord, I've been here a long time, haven't I?

Some friends of mine were playing this game. I over heard them talking about Nationstates, so I thought I'd give it a try.

This isn't the first nation I made, I actually had a couple of others before this (for which I cannot remember). I actually got bored of the game, to be honest. To me, I thought the game was just answering and waiting for issues (you can tell I had not advance anywhere past my nations main page). After a while, I came back, but was soon bored of waiting for issues to appear. It wasn't until I over heard some of my friends again that they actually had their own region in this game. I had never even heard of regions before, but I thought I decided to give it another shot. So I came back to nationstates, and thus was the birth of this glorious nation.

Edit: Oh damn! I thought I was on my main nation... well this is awkward.

I'm a fan of mapping, and I saw once that some mapper had something on NationStates (I don't remember who, and I'm pretty sure their nation CTE'd). I was kind of interested but for some reason didn't sign up.
Then around two months later, one of my friends told me about it and I remembered it. I signed up later that day and began on my adventure, and now we're here.

2005. The indie games developer Zooptek (creator of Paintball 3 Extreme) made a text-based strategy game called 'Battlegrounds' where you can log in with a Nationstates account and then slowly collect in-game cash to spend on units, attacking other Nationstates members who had any active units. You had to have an NS account but beyond that the game had no effect on NS itself. From this I met a lovely American couple who ran an NS region with some very good roleplay. I spent a good 3 years or so just lurking on NSG while eating a tuna & cheese panini each morning at college.....then I finally decided on commenting.

I discovered NationStates waaay back in 2009 whilst looking up a book series I was a fan of then, the Icemark Chronicles. I chanced across a nation on NS named after one of the fictional countries in the book, found the concept intriguing and that was that. Old Tyrannia and its ironically slightly older twin, New Imperial Tyrannia, were made the same day; the latter was my main account until I turned automatic login off for some reason and only then realised to my horror that I couldn't remember the password.

On Fox News Fair and Balanced, I wish I had been around at the beginning of NS when most nations were real world named nations, it must have been NS Heaven then, most still exist and log in and out but don't RP Post, I don't know why?
