You can install a piyin keyboard and type the characters in english e.g: Typing Ren2 is going to give you 人 among other characters. On windows10, you can type "languages" and then install simplified chinese from there. Or just use google translate to make simple phrases.

It’s ok, 2nd and 3rd gen Chinese Americans don’t really use Mandarin (or Cantonese) that much in day-to-day life. Also, recent Chinese/Taiwanese/Hong Kong immigrants are often quite fluent in English to begin with. I understand it may be different in other English-speaking countries. Where are you from btw?
