New Jersey to Teach LGBT History in Schools

New Jersey has become the second state in the nation after California to pass a law requiring schools to teach LGBT history in their classrooms.

WABC-TV reports, under the new measure, public schools must include lessons about the political, economic and social contributions of the LGBT community.

The new law goes into effect at the beginning of the 2020 school year.

Governor Murphy called the law a step towards inclusion and fairness.

This legislation comes as the #ExposeChristianSchools hashtag started trending on Twitter. It was introduced shortly after news broke that Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, would be teaching at a Christian school in northern Virginia that lists "homosexual or lesbian sexual activity" as among the disqualifying criteria for prospective employees.

So NSG, it's a short article but sums up the situation well it looks like. So, what do you think?

Personally, I find it beautiful and wonderful that students will be taught LGBT history and believe that history of all oppressed groups - Native Americans, LGBT people, African Americans, etc. - should be taught so we don't repeat the mistakes we've made in our history. I applaud New Jersey for joining in teaching history.

Proof that we are -by far- the best state.

I mean, if this is the standard for measuring a state's greatness, New Jersey is second best. California beat them to this one.

So the highlight of the lessons is going to be when a closeted former governor resigned because he gave his gay lover a job that he was unqualified for, and gave us the classic quote "I am a gay American" in his coming out/resignation speech?

This ought to be entertaining...

No you're not, you're just a beta version hybrid of people from Philly and New York City into an entire state.

I didn't even know California teaches LGBT history in schools, so this probably won't do much in New Jersey either.

Eh, you're right, but we're better than New York, which means everything.

There is nothing wrong with this as long as they don't go overboard with the identity politics or go full out SJW.

If they strictly stick to teaching LGBT history and not instantly devolve into “Look at how oppressed we were! OMG, look at all that oppressi— Oh, you wanted to actually know about Ferdinand I of Bulgaria?”

Given that those are just empty buzzwords, there isn't much danger of that.

Not even California managed to do that, so it should be okay.

When I use words, they have meaning. Empty, those words are not.

Sounds like you have a lack of understanding of LGBT history, perhaps if you'd been taught in school?

I mean the fact they didn't include any examples of what behaviours they're ascribing those terms to is pretty telling in that regard.

If Google did me right, it looks recent - like they started teaching LGBT history in schools in 2017.

LGBT history is integral to understanding modern US history and politics.

I've heard of June being Pride month and February being black history month but never heard October being about LGBT history.
