The ancient Babylonians had a religious role in which the people were not viewed as man or women. I'll quickly respond to the counterpoint that they were probably still biologically man or woman. Our scientific constructions when it comes to biology have changed over the centuries so those aren't universal or concrete. Maybe generally so but there are multiple levels in which gender operates.
I’m pretty sure people still have X and Y chromosomes.
It’s either XX or XY, anything else results in genetic disorders like infertility and sometimes just straight up death.
And just because something is believed in by ancient people doesn’t mean it’s correct.
People used to believe the Earth was the center of the universe for example.

I grew up with a single mother. I learned whatever you're supposed to learn from a father from my grandfather. The same is true of someone with two mothers, and vice versa with two fathers and a grandmother.

I Agree to desagre, yes my male family members have basicly become my dad but no one can replace a father.

I have a question for you: what significance do you assign to blood-relation in determining family (in a socio-cultural and psychological sense, since the strictly biological answer is obvious)?

Good qwestion blood and meratal relatives as well as very close friends are the base of any health family unit.
You have 3 layers.
1. Parents, grandparents and siblings.
2.1st cousins, and there parents.
And finally close friends.

Why, then, pray tell, does the term "father figure" remain so well known and consistent in society?
Because there is a problem of people getting married for the wrong reason. Be it an unplanned pregnancy, peer pressure etc. But the statistics show that children who grew up without a father are more likely to have mental and emotional problems later in life.
