So recently a reporter who happened to be black entered a restaurant that had a picture of coal miners at the pub after work, unwashed. Their faces were black from soot and this reporter instantly ignored the context of the photo and decided it was blackface. And racist. And newsworthy.

Friends said, “It’s coal miners at a pub after work.” It was a photograph of coal miners with blackened faces. I asked a Latinx and white woman for their opinion. They said it looked like coal miners at a pub after work. Then they stepped back, frowned and said it’s men in blackface.

So NSG does context matter when it comes to declaring racism?

Sure Context matters. But it can change a lot of things. Even beyond what the maker of something intends when they make a piece of art. I disagree that's what happened in this case by intent in itself ain't magic.

I'm against racism, but come on not everything you have to see has to be racist so in my opinion yes context is important.

It's understandable that he did a double take. Where he went wrong, like so many people do, is to assume that the world should care enough to need respond to his every minor discomfort and ensure that he - as he is - never encounters something with which he is uncomfortable.

He should work on perfecting himself by working to understand why he jumped to these conclusions and continued to feel angry once he knew they were misplaced. He should not share those conclusions with the world, give them a value that they do not deserve and imply that the world should do something about it for him. That seems arrogant and faintly narcissistic.
