Three general elections in a year. Arguably, Likud's never had it so good now that the settlements have been declared legal by the US, yet no government can form.

What are they going to do if they can't form a government after that? Emergency electoral reform? Abolish the prime minister? Force Netanyahu to resign?

I have no idea...the polls show more deadlock, however, so if nothing changes, a lot's going to change. Or it could be something as simple as the President stepping in and demanding a forced coalition.

Not our fault Israeli politics is such a mess, still less that this entire mess is due to one man who wants to stay in power whatever the cost.

Is there any meaningful opposition to Netanyahu within likud?
The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

The most fundamental problem of politics is not the control of wickedness but the limitation of righteousness.

Some, but Netanyahu's done a lot to entrench his position, including getting all Likud MK candidates in the most recent election to publicly swear loyalty to him, filming a Likud faction meeting to get his MKs to commit on camera to his strategy after the election, and forming an alliance with the other right-wing and religious parties to create a sort of 55-member bloc (including Likud) behind him personally.

There are some MKs, like Gideon Sa'ar, who would like to lead Likud and would probably challenge Netanyahu if a leadership election happened. Indeed, when Netanyahu floated the idea of a snap leadership election in another effort to entrench his position, Sa'ar tweeted "I'm ready" and Netanyahu quietly ditched the idea. However, Netanyahu remains very popular within Likud and within the wider Israeli right, so it's easier for them to wait for him to go, rather than actively put their heads above the parapet and try to bring him down.

The mandate has officially been returned: https://www.yahoo.com/news/deadline-looms-israeli-politicians-seek-avoid-third-election-111336928.html

Now the Knesset has three weeks to choose a new PM...which they likely won't achieve.

Well since Bibi has been indicted it’s probably not going to be a hard choice for some. Liberman might want to just support Gantz

Not likely. Gantz seems like he wants a C&S with the Joint List(realistically the only way he can form a government without Likud), and that's a big red line for Lieberman.

Didn't a poll say that Bibi deserves the most blame for a third election?

But he can still remain in office while this gets carried out if I'm correct. But regardless, he's a sinking ship now.

Uh huh, watch the slimey bastard get out of court smiling as he defended his case. It's just an indictment, the trial still has to be done. He tries to ask from the Knesset themselves not to have him trialed while he is in elections or in office.

Benjamin Netanyahu has GOT to go. He is clearly corrupt and unscrupulous and has been in office for ten whole years. Take him out of the picture and Israel has a national unity government without Avigdor Lieberman playing the role of kingmaker.

Netanyahu obviously won't go away, since his only chance of not getting thrown in prison is by staying in power.

I don't know. I think that Gideon Saar will put up a good challenge, but I'm not convinced he can actually unseat Netanyahu, he's too popular among Likud members. As I've been saying, besides his corruption problems, he and the party have been riding quite high with a strong economy and increased support from the US on recognition of both Jerusalem and the settlements.

Netanyahu has the upper hand in name recognition. Challengers will need to build up their name recognition and run on anti-corruption.

And on the promise that they can bring about a functioning government and avoid a third election. They probably know that without Bibi at the top, a grand coalition can be achieved without difficulty.

Netanyahu shares plenty of blame for not preventing a third election along with Lieberman. While Lieberman refused to side with either Netanyahu or Gantz, the former has been seen as haphazardly pushing through a government as his get out of jail card.
